So Exactly What Existed Before the Big Bang?

Anytime I find myself getting remotely sleepy as I lie in bed, I inevitably turn my mind to thinking about exactly how the universe came into being. I mean, I understand the Big Bang and all, but exactly what state existed that made the Big Bang possible? Is there a beginning to time?

Fuck, I've done it again. Time for a triple dose of Ambien.

i watched a documentary about how all matter in existence will eventually degrade. everything breaks down during a countless amount of time. black holes remain the longest of anything in existence. when the last ones destroy themselves all the energy is let back out into space in a "big bang". so theoretically there could have been many big bangs resulting in different universes in previous time.

I don't know if the human mind is capable of comprehending the answer but this is where I have come to accept that there is a God.

I tend to agree, and it's usually how I manage to fall asleep. That is, until I start to wonder when God came into existence exactly..

This series is quite good, and surprisingly understandable for us laymen.

So, we are talking about what existed before the Universe was born and you're discounting science fiction as a part of this discussion?

A new Nova series starts tomorrow night- 4 parts, with Brian Greene- try that for insomnia.

But the answer is: time came into existence with the Big Bang. Spacetime, actually. So there was no Before.

Great, huh?

That, unless you buy into the Steinhardt's Universe, in which case the big bang is the result of colliding universes.

Even better....

My mother sat me down and put on this program about string theory a few months back when I was visiting. It was mind boggling. I can't say that I fully understand it though.

Watch that space show with Morgan Freeman narrating, it's pretty good.

For me personally, I believe you are on to something here. Time... it mandates mortality and seems to be a parameter that limits our understanding of the true nature of things. After all, how could we get caught up in "what came first" conundrums unless we were caught in a time quagmire?

So you've essentially taken my original question and squared it in terms of complexity, lol
