So I'm pretty new to this whole fashion thing. Although I wouldn't consider myself a particularly bad dresser I am trying to drastically improve. In the next coming week I'm going to go on a shopping frenzy to get my staples and a few nice articles of clothing.

To give you guys an idea, I am tall and skinny (6 ft 30 inch waist) and I mostly wear bootcut jeans with brown eccos and some kind of tee.

I'm going to go to American Apparel to pick up some basic color tees to layer with and wear on their own.

I'm going to get a pair of casual sneakers (i'm leaning towards onitsuka tigers or pumas - please give me advice on this).

I have a couple of nice casual button up shirts (from american eagle - yes I know you all hate it, so if there is anywhere else I should look, please tell me).

What else should I look for that is essential to my collection, and where should I look for it. What do you guys find you really love and couldn't go without. Thanks a ton, I could really use the help!

maybe get a better pair of shoes (boots). A good pair of chelseas or laceups, even engineer...depending on your preferences and mindset

sounds like you have the same proportions as Saucemaster. You could always take a look at his pics in WAYWT since what he's wearing would prolly have the same fit on you.

casual sneakers....Onitsukas are good. The Mexico 66 is a classic

Filene's Basement, end-of-year/boxing week sales, Last Calls, the possibilities are endless.

A proper pair of jeans. You sure as hell shouldn't be wasting great proportions like yours on bootcut jeans when you could be wearing Diors.

thanks for the reply... just goes to show how new I am at this. I had never even heard of dior jeans before this forum. Do you know where I should go to buy these? A certain department store, or do they have their own shops? thanks.

as best a price I can find... I don't have a whole lot to work with, but if it's something really important I'd be willing to pay a bit for it. maybe around 100 for a pair of jeans i really liked. If you find something that you really like I can tell you if I can afford it or not.

I'm a big fan of Onitsuka Tigers. Also consider some Chucks. For jeans, this is a good time of year because the nice department stores have them on sale. Also, I haven't tried them on, but the Gap has a new line or raw selvedge denim that is probably quite solid for the money. Levi's 511s and 514s are also great jeans in that price range.

Stay far, far away from American Eagle. I really like the way Ben Sherman button-downs fit. I picked up a couple more on sale at Nordstrom last week.
