As for the use of polished binder, It is not something Prada introduced; I have a pair of pre-Prada Church's in polished binder. Polished binder does not always means inferior quality leather.

I have been looking for a black wingtip, and I have seen this shoe in person many times

I'm looking at the black "polished binder." I really like the substantial but dressy look of this Grafton model.
My question is: what is exactly wrong with the "polished" binder leather that Church's uses in many of its high end shoes? I understand the leather may be "corrected," but I am talking purely about characteristics apparent to the wearer (flexibility and durability of the shoe, how it breathes, how it shines, etc). Church's seems to use both regular calf and binder interchangeably in its shoes and charges the same amount, so it seems like these binder shoes aren't meant to be lower quality.

+1 on both posts. People, Church's DOES use normal calfskin. A LOT.

Personally I hate CG, but it isn't necessarily lower quality that normal calf leather. The grain of any quality of leather can be corrected although it is usually cheaper because the process can cover up imperfections, and so there are varying degrees of quality of CG. I suspect that some people just like the shiny look and don't realise how plasticky and tacky it looks; I'd never buy them but you can't really blame Church's for making the shoes if the market is there.

Alcibiades, I have the Consul as well, black box calf.

They are relatively new, but they seem a well-made, handsome shoe.

I wonder two things about the grousing about Church's shoes:

-- How much is simply ill will related to control by Prada?

-- Do Church's send shoes of varying quality to different markets? Those I see in Switzerland all appear to be lovely shoes. (This logic is strained, I realise. Nevertheless, I am curious.)

All that said, I have no experience with pre-Prada Church's, so someone please correct me if I am of the mark in my musings.

never understood why churchs got so much hoopla. i like their conservative styling enough. the only time ive seen them in the flesh -- either at nordstroms or neimans [forgot] -- all of the pairs their felt really really stiff and cheap

As an owner of the Church's Consul, I will say the construction and qality is comparable to Alden and Crockett and Jones that I own. I am comparing the Church's "custom grade" line with similar priced shoes from C&J and Alden (i.e. in the $500 to $800 range). I think for the most part Church's calfskin shoes are better than Alden calfskin (outside of Alden "special" makeups that all the retailers have) and are priced accordingly.

Maybe with you out of the picture with English bespoke shoe makers, the wait time will go down across the board.
Xiaogou, honestly, I maxed out a few years back. Other than having shoes refurbished, new shoes are not on the horizon.
