Article on brand diffusion, TJX

Thought this was an interesting USA Today piece on how diffusion works -- and balanced in the reportage.

I have found some excellent stuff at Marshall's, but as has been posted elsewhere by others, my experience is that it's better when the Marshall's is located in an affluent town.

APologies if this was already posted.

Interesting article. I think it confirms what we all knew, i.e. that TJ Maxx, Marshalls, Winners et al. are basically a major distribution channel for some retailers. You see the odd surprise label from time to time, but the PRL stuff is always there, as with other "upscale" mall/department store brands. Obviously those can't just be seasonal leftovers.

I have to admit that I enjoy the occasional treasure hunt at those places, but the Canadian version (Winners) tends to offer far, far fewer nice surprises as compared to their US counterparts.

BBC The Look - Scenting the Money
Series that explores the serious side of the fashion industry examines how designers can expand into a multi-million-pound business, not by selling the clothes they design, but by using sophisticated marketing techniques to lend the kudos of their name to a range of other products, from handbags to perfume.
