Anybody else hate Halloween? - Page 2

I'm not a fan, and never have been. I don't give out candy, either.

I think they all know what Halloween is, but anyone caught trick'n'treating will spend 20 years breaking rocks in a forced labour camp.

Carving jack-o'-lanterns is quite legal though...

At least one commentator suggested we institute a new holiday "Slut Day," when women can dress in whatever slutty outfits they choose, and give Halloween back to the little kids.

According to my mother, who was born in 1919, the custom of trick or treating was only instituted during the 1930s. Prior to that, it was just a night of vandalism and malicious mischief. In some parts of the country, the vandalism and mischief were transferred to the night of October 30. I have heard this referred to as "Devil's Night" or "Goosey Night." It seems to be more an Eastern thing. I have never heard of it being practiced in Southern California.

I stopped trick or treating at age 10 and gave out candy. I still saw people from school until they age 16. I'm wearing a three piece to work on Monday so I reckon people will think I'm in costume.

Halloween is people's best excuse to express their lack of taste.

If you only go to a gentlemen's club once a year, go on Halloween.

I was walking the dog earlier this evening when I saw a dude in a ballerina dress presumably on his way to a Halloween party. facepalm.gif

(Not that I have too much against "slutty.") Traditional Halloween stuff--black cats, pumpkins, old witches, etc.--is kind of cute, but some neighborhood displays are just grotesque and repulsive--dismembered bodies, rotting cadavers, that kind of thing. Giving candy to the trick-or-treaters is sort of fun, but I usually end up with a lot candy I don't want. I shun most candy.

Oh man, you hate that the feast of all saints has been perverted? What I really hate is that christmas has destroyed the wonderful festival of Saturnalia, with its gaudy ornaments and crucifixes (who wants to see a dude on a torture instrument...really!) and easter has changed the absolutely wonderful holiday of Oester into a silly story about a person becoming a zombie. How ludicrous!

Dixit insipiens....

On another note, Halloween started becoming really big among adults around the mid-1970s, when the Boomers really seemed to take it to heart. Prior to that it was mostly something for little kids. When I was teaching college (1969-1973), Halloween pretty much passed unnoticed among my students...as far as I could tell.

Not to mention the suborning and conglomeration of Samhein into some Xtian overlay.

Conne, cheap candy. Somehow I thought you'd be all for this.
