New sports coats - no clue how to pick shirts/ties (rookie sartorialist)

The title pretty much says it all. I'm a rookie at this (I own three cheap suits - one in black! shog[1].gif ), but I just scored two sport coats that I like quite a bit at the consignment store. They aren't Kiton or anything, but I think they should work well. Additionally, I don't think they'll need much tailoring (maybe a smidge more sleeve, but I'll throw up some photos for evaluationabuse once I have a full outfit pulled together), and they are brand new. Quite the find.

I apologize for the photos - I just threw the coats up on the back of a bedroom door, and my camera was having a difficult time with the white balance. After a little tweaking, these look pretty close to representative of the color and pattern (yes, it's a cream colored door).

So... what colors and patterns of shirts/ties/pocket squares should I start with? All of my existing shirts are too big (I've lost a lot of weight, and they no longer fit around the next - by about an inch - and have way too much fabric in the chest), so I'm kinda starting from a blank slate. I just feel overwhelmed by the choices, and need a little help honing in. Would a tattersall be too bold? And I've got no clue where to start with ties and pocket squares. The budget is tight, so "trial and error" isn't really going to work for me, unfortunately. I see lots of great examples here, but I have a hard time translating that to items I own (and items I need).

I was probably going to go with some dark grey wool trousers (need to buy them, too - none of my pants fit anymore either), but I also welcome suggestions here as well.

The windowpane pattern on each of those jackets is large enough and subtle enough that you could get away with a tattersall or gingham shirt, as long as they were paired with solid ties. You could easily wear solid white, blue or pink shirts with patterned ties -- say dots or a repp stripe. I would think a university or butcher stripe would also work well. You didn't ask about trousers, but obviously you'll want solids there as well. Mid-gray flannel would be nice, navy would work if you're into that, cream-colored in the spring & summer.

Really, the most important thing is to make sure they fit well.

With said tattersall/gingham, you can also wear repp stripe or any other "big" stripe ties. small check + big stripe + big check is a classic combo.
