St. Crispin's Day download

In honour of St. Crispin--the patron saint of shoemakers--I have the pleasure of announcing that J.H. Thornton's Textbook of Footwear Manufacture is now available for general download at the The Honourable Cordwainers' Company website at the "Guild Library" link.

The HCC is a 501 c-3 tax exempt, educational organization dedicated to the preservation of Traditional shoemaking techniques, lore and literature.

This book is reproduced by explicit permission and is unavailable anywhere else except vintage paper. The text has been fully recognized and illustrations faithfully reproduced. It is in pdf format.

Enjoy.

St. Crispin's Day (the 'shoemaker's holiday') has, since the medieval times, been celebrated on 25 October.

Thanks...

BTW, I edited my post above and added the link to the HCC website. The Guild Library link is at the bottom of the left-hand frame.

Yes, I was able to find it.  It's a nice, clean site.

Thank you for the St. Crispin's Day wishes.

Since the middle ages St. Crispin's Day has been known as "The Shoemaker's Holiday" and traditionally shops were closed for a day of merrymaking and revelry. My shop is closed as it is every October 25th.

I give the birle to those feasting and celebrating tonight, and to all our members and collegues in the Trade:

"Trowl the bowl, the jolly nut-brown bowl,
And here, kind mate, to thee;
Let's sing a dirge for Saint Hugh's soul, and down it merrily."

Happy St. Crispin's Day.

Thanks MT.

Actually, I was the host this year of the Annual General Meeting of The Honourable Cordwainers' Company--my guild. Federal law mandates that 501 c-3's have an annual meeting. So we schedule it on the weekend closest to St. Crispin's Day and people come from all over the world to hear presentations on technique, Traditions and history, as well as renew friendships and talk shop. It is a three day event with the evening devoted to feasting and celebration...with some members wearing kilts, frock coats and full pegged boots, or period attire.

We had quite a crowd this year and on Sunday there was a large group in my shop...upstairs and downstairs. As mentioned elsewhere I took possession of my new shoemaker's bench just days before so it was a particularly satisfying event for me.
