Scarves inside dress shirt?

OK, I'm a sucker for the TV show Community, and not always because of the sartorial tastes of Jeff Winger. smile.gif

In the recent episode (the six alternate realities) Troy and Abed both wore matching outfits to a dinner party with little scarf thingies inside their shirt collars. So what's with that? Common? Uncommon? Stylish or no?

I had two thoughts in my mind when I first saw it:
1. That would really cut down on the "ring around the collar" issue I tend to have on my lighter dress shirts
2. I might be spending too much time on this forum, if I am noticing such things in a TV show.

Thoughts?

Those are not scarves, they are called cravates...

Not sure they are all that stylish now a days... George Hamilton, Hugh Hefner, Clark Gable and of course Liberace used to use them...

so if you like them be my guest...blush.gif

I was about to defend the cravate, but those shots from PT have almost made me reconsider...

 

To the OP- Swiego, the cravate is the origin of all modern ties. They came from the attempts of fashionable French gentlemen to copy the pieces of cloth that Croatian mercenaries wore around their necks. And from there they gradually evolved through Ascots and bow ties to modern ties. I think they can still be worn well, and the examples in TV stills you posted aren't bad IMHO. Like bow-ties though, you really have to get them right to make them work. I approve of experimentation, but PT's pics are excellent cautionary tales in terms of what to avoid in terms of pattern, shirt-buttoning, and other accessories.
