What is the name for the detail on this tweed vest?

Dear Folks:

This week I am selling a tweed suit with one curious detail.

It's a Donegal tweed 3pc made to order by J Press. The coat is a 3b sack but the suit has many details that are nonstandard for Press: double vents, double reverse pleated trousers, etc.

The vest has a seam running along the top of the lower pocket, as you can see here. I am a vest fan & have dozens, but none with this seam. Why is it there? Does it have a name or some history of being useful for something? Or did the shop just patch together two pieces of cloth?

Vest with seam:

I am not sure what you call that detail, but what's the size and how much is this going for?

EDIT: Nvm..not my size: http://www.ebay.com/itm/J-PRESS-trad-DONEGAL-TWEED-3pc-SUIT-42-R-us-52-eu-rare-details-/380378909447?pt=US_CSA_MC_Suits&hash=item5890598b07#ht_5735wt_1144

Wish it was.

Decorative feature on a low end brand with little concept of classic appearance when it suits?

Iirc, Dopey and/or Vox posted about something similar. Maybe it was dopey in Vox's swiss army suit thread.

You really think J Press is low end? They aren't stratospheric like many discussed by SF but are not exactly cheap.

As to the second part of your comment, I haven't seen their custom made stuff before but J Press isn't exactly known to be fashion forward.

its called a tattersall vest.
by tradition
the seam should be right on the waist.
and the vest should have a very pronounced waist.

A waist seam is typical of a postboy vest, though without seeing more, I can't tell if that is what you have.

Low End? J Press? I really don't think so. It is a very traditional clothing company, one that was founded in the US in early 1900s. I think they have excellent craftsmanship, and are in good taste if you don't mind not being 'fashion forward'. Its a preppy brand, and one of the best.

Dopey and A Tailor are in line with Jefferyd, whom I queried privately. The postboy has the lapels and the lower flapped pockets, though traditionally it had a wool backing as it was meant to worn openly by the postboy who needed to freely move his reign-holding arms.

A tattersal vest may also traditionally include this waist seam. Here is a picture of Sir Gerald du Maurier, author of Trilby (from which the hat takes its name) and father of "Rebecca" author Daphne, wearing a very waisted and, I believe, waist-seamed tattersal vest:

Press is not handsewn with thread wetted by the tears of virtuous Tuscan peasant maidens, but it is a perfectly good brand with conservative styling.

Don't worry, GBR's posts are just decorative features on a low-end douchebag with no concept of not being a complete asshole at every opportunity.

Seriously, pay him absolutely no mind.

Thank you for your support, but we can all do our bit to keep up the class of the joint.

Ad hominem attacks don't help.

I don't care, day after day I read the most brutal, dire whinging and veiled insults, always oozing with condescension and always placed beside the username "GBR."

He must lead the most miserable life on earth, because nothing less would account for his vindictive brand of supernova-magnitude petulance.

Take your pills Golden. I'm sure GBR is a plain nasty person, but relax, it's just the internet.thumbs-up.gif
