Great (?) Shade Debate - RayBan Wayfarer vs Persol 649

Aside from aviators it could be argued that the other two iconic sunglasses are RayBan Wayfarers and Persol 649s. I thought some might be interested in a shades face-off, starring yours truly.

I had a current version of vintage style Wayfarers stolen a few months back. I wasn't too distraught as due to their flat lenses they seemed to get a white spot in my vision field from light coming in from the sides. I replaced them with what I think are called 'New Wayfarers' which have slightly less thick frames and a bit of curve in the lens to prevent the above problem. They feel weightless, don't slip and are very comfortable.

Then recently I got some Persol 649's for my fiancee and tried them on to see if they would work for me. I like all the classic McQueen pedigree etc. but when I've seen them in real life they always looked huge. These ones are the smallest frame size (52mm) in black. My head is broad enough that the arms still bend outward slightly at the pivot point, but they still don't feel very secure on my head and seem a little 'front heavy', like the weight of the frames is not balanced by the arms somehow.

I still think the Persols are too big on my face, so for anyone thinking of getting the Persols, caveat emptor, at least until you can try them on in person.

I will stick with the Wayfarers as my daily beater shades. The other advantage is that unlike almost all my other (non sporting, metal framed) glasses, they don't have the rubber nose pieces that pinch you on the bridge, so they are great for extended wear, long road trips, etc.

Here's a comparison ...

persols dont work for you, at all.

they dont work that well on me, either. and i do i have the same fit problem you described - no real bridge/nose support and feels front-heavy

649s don't work well for you at all. I wear 714s but I think they are more approachable than the 649s (at least they fit my face way better). Stick with the Wayfarers.

FWIW there is a smaller size of 649s out there (49mm).

Wayfarers FTW.

for you wayfarers... for me... wayfarers... smile.gif
by the way, aside from the fact that Steve McQueen used to use them and thus every body thinks they are cool, I am not sure why; those Persols are actually quite fucking ugly... my $ 0.02

let me be clear on my opinion Persols 649 are quite fucking ugly regardless of the face...

Thanks to you and others for your concurrence.

Maybe the Persols became popular as they hit that sweet spot as a combination between plastic/tortoiseshell frames (a la Wayfarers) with an aviator-ish lens shape, coming out at a time in the late sixties/early seventies when bigger (lapels, collars, ties, leg openings) was better, I've tried them several times but they are clearly not for me. My beloved on the other hand has a broad, wide, round head (N/P)!) so they look fine on her.

The Persols make you look like Christopher Walken. Just an FYI. I realize they are not yours, so it doesn't really matter. If you wanted to be Christopher Walken for Halloween, you could just throw on a suit and those 649s and everyone would love your costume.

That first pic screams, "We're getting the band back together. We're on a mission from God".

Agree with everyone else here - Wayfarers good, Persols look like crap. I still have some old Wayfarers knocking around but never wear them for the reason you state - too flat and vertical. Not nearly as iconic but the Ray-Ban model I've worn for the last 30+ years is the Balorama. Their form was more wrap-around but not drastically so and provided excellent protection for me on my motorcycle. One of my friends always referred to them as the "Colonel Diaz" glasses (character in Woody Allen's movie "Bananas"). smile.gif

I was also split between these two but couldn't get the 649 to work on my face.
Someone recommended me the Persol 2931:
175

They're quite a bit smaller and easier on the face, but still look a wee bit bit like the 649.
The lens don't have that tear drop shape which prevents the 649 from working with most people.
In the end, I bought both the wayfarers and the 2931s.
