Why do think this? Just curious about your thoughts because I'm about to drop some coin on either 2 pair of C&J's or a really nice pair of Carmina's.

Where do you live? Considering it's going to be your first two good pairs...you'll likely want to try them on. It is definitely worth paying a premium at a brick and mortar store, especially for the first shoe. That way, you can buy the second shoe off of an online retailer/gently used off of eBay/B&S for cheaper, assuming it's in the same last and the first one fits well.

Pick whichever ones fit better. If you're buying without trying on, pick whichever ones you think look better.

Get one sub $500 pair and rotate it with your current dress shoe. Sometimes you have to wear a shoe for a period of time before you can determine if the fit is good. Once thats done get your second pair with any size adjustments. If you are not able to try on the shoes locally, I would recommend getting from Edwards, check with them if they can get the model of shoe you are looking for.

Agreed. At least for me. Shoes crease, wear, and damage so easily that I have a hard time spending too much money on a pair. Plus, I'm too uneducated to tell the difference other than the cool toes found on the really high end shoes.

Edwards of Manchester. They can check availability of shoes (brands which they carry) from the factories, even models not listed on their site. They do MTOs too. Great to work with and they have an exchange policy too.

Thank you guys for your input!

I got a question though, where do you guys get your C&Js handgrades nowadays?

Plal doesn't seem to be stocking up on them anymore and the prices seem to be the same everywhere now.

I shall go broke for shoes and it shall be worth it! icon_gu_b_slayer[1].gif

Also, you must factor in sets of properly fitting trees into the purchase price which isn't cheap. One trick I use is for my EGs I go to RL for the trees which are based on the 202 last as are many of EGs lasts and only cost $55.

That reminds me! I haven't factored in the cost of the lasted shoe trees.

For me, I have a wide foot which causes me to size up, usually an 8-8.5EE which I size up to 9E as it's more readily available.

I live in Singapore. The decent brands they have here are Church's and Santoni's which at retail price locally, is going to blow my USD1000 budget with just 1 pair.

Many thanks...looks like a great place to pick up some G&G, C&J and EG with a fair exchange policy. I didn't see that they carry Carmina's?

You can get Carmina direct from their website (less VAT if outside EU), just drop them an email at info@carminashoemaker.com. Not sure if they can offer an exchange though.
