Suggestions for Man Day

Have about 5-7 dudes coming over (friends from school, neighbours, etc.) for what I have termed Man Day one evening.

OK first of all, for you latent homos in the crowd, no this isn't intended to be a sausage party. So no gay jokes please shog[1].gif

So here's the plan that I have communicated:
"Man Day"
-Steaks
-Beer
-Red Wine
-Tunes

The crowd: Age 40(barely) to 49. Pretty cool guys.
The venue: my house

I have a bunch of tunes lined up which we're going to listen to loudly. I was gonna get some bigass rib-eye steaks and grill them up, along with a huge salad and some kind of side dish (garlic mashed?)

Accompanied by various beers and red wines..

Question: what can I do to make this an epic bro evening? Want to keep it classy and jack it up a notch. We're not gonna be wearing tuxes and sipping martinis, but wanted it to be more than just a "barbeque at my place" type deal.

Stuff that I specifically need help on:
The bar. I'm gonna pick up some mixes, and large bottles of vodka, rum, and Crown Royal. That's about all I know. Gonna be pretty standard rum/coke, beer, red wine, etc. Nothing fancy. Should I go a bit overboard and get stuff like limes/lemons, Kahlua, etc? Will likely have Limoncello and Jagermeister shots but was maybe thinking of Tequila or something.

Dinner. Steak/mashed potatoes/salad is blah. Got some awesome steaks lined up but I need something more awesome to go with it. I know of a few good recipes for salads and I'm a pretty OK cook so might be able to fix something up there. But the boring mashed potatoes will suck for sure.

Appetizers. Can never be too awesome.. what should I make? Don't want to go basic fingerfood (pizza bites, etc.) so was thinking of a smoked salmon/shrimp platter with some dip. Something that people will remember for a long time would be good!

Any thoughts on how to make this an awesome awesome party that people remember forever?

Although I have actually thought about planning something similar to this, I do think that you have opened this thread up to a slew of gay jokes. I pity you.

This is an insanely ridiculous thread. You need help deciding what you and your friends should eat, drink, and do? if limoncello shots dont scream "man night" I dont know what does.

Understood about the gay jokes. I opened with that comment to hold back the floodgate of impending homo comments smile.gif

Yes, it is a bit ridiculous but I'm out of ideas. I already have the idea for what we're going to eat/drink/do, I was just hoping for some ideas to make the evening more "awesome" than a standard guy night. Anyone can have steak/beer but I was trying to make it more awesome than that.

Dirty bird is probably not a bad idea, actually. Might actually pick up a bucket.. something everyone likes but nobody ever wants to admit eating. Works for man day!

I'll try to post a serious reply.

Bar. Stick with craft beers, bold red wines, and whiskey (Scotch, bourbon, rye). Learn how to make a Manhattan, which is a classic cocktail that is not as stuffy as a martini. The Negroni is a wonderful pre-dinner drink.

Food. Nothing wrong with bone-in ribeyes for guys night. As for sides, check out the menu at your favorite steakhouse -- creamed spinach, mushrooms, mashed potatoes, mac n cheese, etc. Ditto for the appetizers.

Entertainment. Are you going to sit around and shoot the breeze all night long? Consider a low-stakes ($20 buy in) Texas Hold 'Em game. Add whiskey and stogies.

Don't put pressure on yourself to make this an "epic" night that everyone will "remember forever." Frankly, these guys will likely be glad just to get away from their SOs for a night.

Thank you.. exactly what I'm looking for!

On the entertainment note, we might go out to a club later on in the evening (very late) so it won't all be sitting around shooting the breeze.

But awesome suggestions..

OK, what's everyone's deal w/Limoncello... is it too gay or womanly or something? Had it at a party where all the dudes thought it was awesome (before the jokes start, yes there were women at the party, and no, all of the coitus that evening was not between men)

facepalm.gif Are you all this helpless? These are your friends, right? They don't need to be constantly entertained. Give them a variety of drinks, let them choose the ones they want, sit back and enjoy.

The last thing a group of forty-year-old men need is a woman in man's clothing hovering them at a party worried about if they're having a good time or not. What's next? Are you going to ask them "What are you thinking about?" every five minutes?

Relax. It'll work out fine.

1. cigars. can't emphasize this enough. cigars

2. I'd stick to 3-5 bottles of good straight booze, plus red wine and a few beers. rye, bourbon, scotch, maybe gin and some high end vodka.

3. how about a movie like the godfather, or a few episodes of sopranos or breaking bad, or a recorded fight?

I'm not a big fan of steaks, myself - I usually only eat steaks for business. can you get some good barbeque or something like that for apps?

Hire someone to roast a whole pig and chop it there. get some tortillas or it it by itself. other thing that is pretty awesome is they have these guys that will make you fresh tacos on a large plancha grill...they bring everything, you ask for a taco and they make it for you. maybe make some lamb chop popsicles with mint jelly...those are always good.

Get a wide variety of beers from around the world. Make some pitchers of interesting drinks using tequila. Make limoncello granita for dessert.

have a fire pit to chill at and shoot the shit.

cigars and scotch later in the night.

maybe throw scarface on the TV.

is getting a stripper to come over out of the picture?
