Bought a Hart Shaffner Marx dark charcoal & navy-cobalt stripe suit from Nordstrom Rack for $420 thinking they were half-canvassed. NOT. Turns out they just have a canvassed lapel? Should've done more research than a quick 5-minute google search on my iPhone. Anyways, I'm fairly sure I'll return it, since research indicates $400 is only a deal on HSM if it's their up-market brand. Oh, and I was really looking for a navy suit anyways.
I have one charcoal w/ gray pinstripe suit from Jos A Bank that I've never loved. I've been able to get away with it because I'm young & in shape, it's tailored well and I can dress it up with higher-quality ties, but I think the time is well past nye to supplement (read: replace) it.
I'd really like a quality half or full-canvased suit and since I don't have $1200 or the time to wait for a killer sale, I'm leaning towards one of the navy benjamin suits. Given I'm an 8" drop, I was leaning towards the separates as the cost premium is negligible once one factors in the tailoring to rebuild 34" trousers. Unfortunately it seems ehaberdasher's selection of navy trousers is limited. SO, it looks like I'll go with the 39/40R Lucente dark navy suit.
I'm young so can wear the slightly fashion-forward lucente fine, but I'm not sure how I feel about the button placement. Thoughts? Also not sure why I wrote so much just to get to the main point (maybe because I've a cold?), which is this: what's up with benjamin's loopy split-sizing? Will the 39/40R fit my solid 40R frame? Why do the 39/40, 41/42 thing?
Also, will I be genuinely thrilled with the quality of the benjamin suit? Will it fulfill all my hopes and dreams? Oh, btw - if anyone has experience with them benjamin ties made w/ Zegna silk, I'm all ears.
