Danner Stumptown Collection

Danner came out this fall with its new Stumptown Collection. Here are some to look at:

First up is the Mountain Light Lownsdale, made with Horween olive chromexcel leather. Every boot in this collection is built on a wide (EE) last:


Mountain Light Stark, Danner brought the Japan cristy sole boot craze home:



As always, made in the USA with prices to match.

If I remember right, the stumptown collection is essentially releasing the models Danner was making exclusively for Japan, just in the US. There are a few new makeups for sure tho.

Shoreman is right, basically.

I picked up the Danner Mountain Light Lownsdales, which are the regular Mt Lights with olive chromexcel and a vibram (non-christy) sole. So the chromexcel and the sole are special to the boot, but it's the usual Danner Mt. Light.

I love them, fwiw.

I was wondering about the wide last. If one usually wears medium width D shoes, what's its like with a last made for wide feet? I have normal feet if any one asks.

I'd like to know the same thing.

Plus, does anyone have any fit pics?

I sized down 1/2. Fits just fine. I have a reg width foot. Wear a 10.5d in the alden Barrie last. 11 or 11.5 in most nikes, 44 in CP.

So I have 10.5E in these.

Good. I was wondering if they fit loose. Like you, I have normal width feet.

I wear EU 42, in D width, American 9. I'm just guessing since the last is made for wide feet, go down half a size. 8.5 should fit. If not, you can move back up.

Would you recommend these for a harsh Alberta winter? I'll be trekking to work in snow-covered streets, and I need something substantial. These look like they'd fit the bill, and the Chromexcel leather looks amazing.

Expensive but well worth the money. American-made boots are going to be expensive, especially the Chromexcel leather version.

As long as you remember this Danner collection are wide boots, you should be fine!

I talked a little with Jeff Thrope (of Cold Splinters) and Matt Schneider at Danner.

Pete/styleforum: Hey Matt! Danner has been associated with quality boots since its founding in 1932. But quality and design are not the same thing, and it's the boots' looks that make them stand out--what differentiates the design of the Stumptown collection from your average Danner boot?

Matt: For 2011 the designs we have been using are modeled after our classic product that we have been building hiking product for over 50 years. What we have done is gone and played with the materials that we previously had not been using in our hiking products. We are looking at having more product inspired by our heritage that has a new contemporary feel and design.

A number of Stumptown styles are hiking/mountaineering designs, rather than workboots. When did Danner get into the recreational footwear business?

Danner has a long history in hiking, work, hunting, and uniform boots. We are very pleased to be a hiking boot manufacture in the US. Our MTN Light Model has been around for thirty years and previous to that we had our MTN Trail, which is a boot we have had since the 1960s.

Special Danner makeups are a staple of magazines like Free and Easy. Can you give us an idea of the extent of the Japanese market for Danner and tell us how that market might have driven Danner to start the Stumptown collection?

We can't give the exact numbers. We have been selling into Japan for 30 years and have been fueling the market with product that is made in Japan and in the US. We currently sell into hundreds of shops in Japan including Ships and United Arrows.

Jeff confirmed that the boots are on a wide (EE) last and recommends going one half to one full size down from your usual size.
