Even application of shoe polish

Thread Starter

I've just taken up polishing shoes on a regular basis.

When I polish a pair of brown shoes I have with either brown wax or brown cream, I always seem to end up with a portion of the toe being slightly darker than the rest of the shoe (I bought 4 different browns from Meltonian, and used the best match).  Does this suggest that there's something wrong with either my application or my brushing/buffing technique?

Disclaimer:  Nothing more than a pair of Florshiems bought for $50 was hurt in preparing this post.  I want to be sure that I've mastered basic care, before doing any serious upgrade of my shoe rotation.

Pictures?

It could just be due to natural variation in the leather - parts of it may "accept" more pigment than others?
