What are your preferences when it comes to casual wear (Not to be confused with business casual).

Up until a few months I was a polo guy but then I discovered the wonders of  button-downs and have purchased 5 of them in the past months (Purple Oxford, Pink Oxford, Navy Blue Oxford, Regent Green Sueded Broadcloth and a White Poplin) and I'm planning on buying a few more. My polo shirts seem very bland now.

I have to admit I'm a polo guy. I lost count of how many I have.

Generally polos for me, but both definitely have their place in my wardrobe.

For the day time and during the warmer months Polos are a wise choice.

For the night time and cooler months button downs are a go-to.

They really just have different usages but can be used interchangeably.

I *may* own 1 polo shirt. I always feel a bit "frat-boy-ish" in them. I much prefer button front shirts.

How are you wearing them? With shorts or pants/jeans? Tucked, untucked? Cut, uncut?

I do both. Polos more often, and usually in good taste or under a sweater.

However I think I enjoy button downs more.

this, more or less...for me it's polo shirts in spring/summer and button downs in fall/winter. Although, I still wear button downs with the sleeves rolled up in summer if the fabric is light enough.

I always wear them with either chinos or jeans. I only tuck when I'm wearing something over the shirt (jacket, vest, sweater).

I don't know what you mean by cut/uncut .puzzled.gif

I believe this thread is about button down shirts, meaning collars that button down not to be mistaken with button-front shirts.

Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

I find polo shirts look natural untucked, while most button downs read unkempt. Some fitted shorter length untucked BD look fine, but IMO the essential casual wardrobe is a wide array of solid colour, no-logo polo shirts.

As for cut/uncut - do you prefer a clean cut look or a bit of sprezzaturra? How is your hygiene?

A problem with polo shirts that I have observed is that if you are in anything other than great shape the lack of a vertical line (e.g. the line of buttons on a conventional shirt) tends to emphasize the belly, and can make you look even bigger than you are. This isn't a problem I have, but I have seen a number of larger gentlemen wearing polo shirts who really shouldn't. Of course, if you wear polo shirts under a seater etc. this is not an issue.

Derek, you of all people should not feel uncomfortable channeling your inner frat boy.

Yes, it means the collars button down, but button-down shirts, in the sense being used here, are a subset of 'button-front' shirts, as they usually button all the way up the front as well (if one didn't, it would probably be a polo shirt).
