Jack's tailoring in Cambridge/Boston/Somerville - awesome...but too pricy?

Hey guys-

I know there are a million threads about this.  I know.

Anyway, I'm new to getting suits tailored, but have heard nothing but great things about Jack's.

I went in this morning, and he was fantastic - super-kind, not pushy, and the little changes he showed me made a HELL of a difference.

Since I don't know anything about usual tailoring costs, could you guys let me know how reasonable this sounds (keeping in mind that I'm in the Boston area, and he's generally considered one of the top 3 tailors):

(disclaimer, I KNOW people aren't into bonobos/surface2air/anything I can afford - but I'm a grad student, so I'm doing the best I can to look reasonably professional/stylish)

Suit 1 (Bonobos GX with slim fit pant):

Jacket

-sleeves taken in (slimmed)

Pants

-crotch/ass taken in

-legs tapered below knee

-hemmed

Suit 2 (Surface2Air cord - I doubt I'll wear this as a suit, but the jacket looks nice with grey dress pants):

Jacket

-back taken in (I think?  He pinned the jacket in the back, and it raised the profile of the shoulders and slimmed the front v between the lapels and the top bottom)

-sleeves slimmed around wrist (they had a slight bell-shape...non-working button holes)

Pants

-hemmed

I ended up getting charged $285 total.  I know it could be done cheaper, I'm just wondering what your thoughts are, considering the work I had done, the (reported) quality of the work, and the location.  My feelings are that it's worth it to pay extra when you're making any sort of an investment (both monetarily, and in your appearance/self-esteem) - so I'd rather by an extra $100-150 for someone good than take it to my local dry cleaner.

And does anyone know what the most expensive alterations would've been, out of the bunch?  I feel like fixing those Bonobos pants probably cost me a pretty penny, but I didn't ask for a breakdown (plus I got them for half of, so...).  Taking in the back on the surface2air definitely changed it from the "slouched" look they present in their adds...but I think that's a good thing.

I learned a lot through it all...I assumed I needed the waist of the jacket taken it, but it was really a sleeves issue.  I had no idea you generally want separation between the back of the pants and the back of the jacket (hence the ass alteration), etc.

Also, apparently I'm too small for the Bonobos slim fit pants (the smallest ones they make)...not enough junk in the trunk on this guy, apparently.

Thanks!

In which of the aforementioned cities do you reside?

I live right in the middle of Harvard Square - I know people like Rizzo's, but it seems like 70% of the time I admire a guy's suit and ask who his tailor is, the answer is "Jack."

Plus I don't have a car - so heading too far out of the city is a problem for me (don't really wanna bike with a garment bag).

Why do you ask?

As a loyal patron of Jack myself, I'll admit he's on the pricier side. I just dropped $90 to get a cuff shortening and sleeve tapering on a new jacket.

But you know what? I've had similar jobs done for $45 at the cheaper tailors, and I have not been as satisfied. The difference between Jack's tailoring and the other guys is like the difference between $100 dress shoes and $300 dress shoes. It looks pretty steep at first, but once you've tried both, you'll never go back.

I think it's a matter of supply and demand with Jack. The only other tailor I know of around here that's on his level, from what I hear, is Rizzo. I've never been to Rizzo myself, but I hear he's even pricier.

I think the most expensive jobs would be the tapering or "taking in" of various panels of fabric. These jobs don't always need to be done. But if you want your shit to look custom, and you can afford the extra shekels, it's just part of the cost of dress clothes.

Just an update...

I picked up my suits earlier this week, and it was worth.  every.  penny.

Seriously, the guy works magic.  I'll never go anywhere else.

He even insisted on paying me $2 because I didn't realize he was cash only and had to use the ATM across the street (which charged a $2 fee).  "No, no, I insist," he said.  And he really did insist.

Plus I get the feeling he really stands by his work...obviously the major stuff on the suits are here to stay, but he told me to come in any time if I wanted anything else adjusted and he'd take care of it for free - y'know, wear it around, see how it feels/looks, come back and make sure you're happy - that kind of thing.

Pure awesome.
