Carpal Tunnel Experiences?

Ugh, all of a sudden, discomfort and symptoms associated with CT. Never happened before, although I did have some trouble here and there with numbness or elbow/shoulder damage. But never quite like this.

Lucky enough to have a company doc that deals with this all the time, so will visit today - but in the meantime, any experiences/advice on this? I definitely think it's a mouse/elbow issue and will try to fix my setup, and follow docs advice - but is there anything else that works really well in those situations? Goal is to deal with this ASAP before it turns into a major issue - if it isn't already.. frown.gif

Well, you should hope it's something physical that can be fixed. I've had ten years of pain from a period of excess computer use which, so far as my neurologist could work out, was induced by extreme stress. No physically-detectable signs at all.

Luckily, it's nowhere near as bad as it was - though it's hurting now, because I'm thinking about it.

I used to be a 3D modeller and would get CT and eyestrain, especially when deadlines were approaching. Some things which helped me:

Turn the sensitivity down: I used to have it quite high so i could do things quicker but making those small twitchy movements caused my arm to be tense the entire time. Low sensitivity means you'll be making bigger movements, but your hand should be more relaxed, plus you'll be moving from the elbow/shoulder rather than wrist.

Switch to a wacom tablet: Might take some getting used to, but it's more relaxing to hold and uses a different set of muscles.

Get a different mouse: Tastes differ, but my favourite is a Logitech MX518. Fits my hand very well and has large feet that glide easily.

Chair and desk: I had a problem where the chairs arms hit the bottom of the desk, so that was as high as it went. Luckily it wasn't uncomfortable, but every few weeks i'd change out to a standard office chair with no arm rests just cause it allowed me to sit at a different height. You could also try an exercise ball for a chair - keeps you constantly moving and helps your posture.

Good chair (recommend Herman Miller, pricey but an investment)
Getting adequate sleep (if I'm running a heavy sleep debt my wrists feel it before anything else)
Getting adequate hydration (too much coffee, same thing)

These exercises help too.

I went through a period of overwork/high stress recently and thought I'd done myself permanent damage. A few months later and I'm back to normal. Stay safe...
