Dumb watch style question

What's the default, versitile watch style? Silver band, white face? Silver face? Black face?

Need to buy something and not sure what the go-to style is. Thanks.

here you are gonna have people with all kind of opinions about what is a dress and what is a sport watch and whatnot...
in general plain face, leather band = dress watch
black face, complications (ie chronographs,etc), metal band, water resistant = sport

having said that if i had to go with one (only one watch) it would be metal band, water resistant and white dial (face).

something like a rolex datejust, explorer or air king, or a cartier tank...

those watches are technically sport watches, yet you can get away in most semi-formal, business enviroments...

Another vote for a white face Air-King. It was I went with after trying to find my favorite all-purpose watch.

I generally agree with anginaprinzmetal's observations. For an everyday watch it is hard to go past a Rolex DateJust or an Omega Aqua Terra, if your budget doesn't stretch quite so far (although the current 8500 calibre is not cheap).

While I agree that watches with black dials are less formal than white / silver, some other great, everyday options, are the IWC Mark XV or XVI or Rolex Explorer I (especially the older 36 mm models).

If you have large wrists, the Dornbluths are very nice, or Stowa Marine as a cheaper alternative. Another option, again with a black dial, would be the Omega Speedmaster Professional - while that is strictly speaking a sports watch it looks quite dressy with a leather strap.
