I have searched the forums and have been unable to find the answer to a question of mine about acquiring a properly fitting suit.

I am tall and slim: 6'4 180 lbs. With broad shoulders(19.5") and long arms(26" sleeve length) with a 40" chest and 34" waist.

My question is with my build is it possible to find off the rack suits that can be altered to get a slim, good fit on me? Or am I better off seeking out a bespoke or MTM option?

Please include brands/labels in your suggestions.

If you have a shoulder width of 19.5 inches and a size 40 chest, you are definitely going to be better off going with bespoke or MTM. Usually a 19.5 shoulder width would indicate a size 46 jacket or thereabouts. I don't know what you mean by a "26-inch sleeve length." If you mean the measurement from the shoulder seam to the edge of the cuff, that is not particularly long, especially for man of your height. I'm two inches shorter than you, and 26 inches is the length from the shoulder seam to the cuff on one of my tailored jackets that I just measured, and I have rather short arms for a man my height.

I have similar dimensions. J. Crew Ludlow fits me pretty well, that's about the only off the rack thing I can wear. Well, the only decent thing. Murano, which is a pretty low-end brand, also fits slim people well.

That was a typo I meant 36. I wear 35-36 in a  typical dress shirt.

^I had wondered if that were a typo. A 35-36 sleeve length is not especially long for a man of your height. Although I suggested MTM or bespoke, you might see what's available in a 40L or 40XL in ready to wear if finances are an issue.

Your measurements are not sufficiently weird to warrant any special treatment.

The only problem I see with you getting a slim suit is your shoulder measurement. I have an almost identical build as you, except I'm about 10 lbs heavier and my shoulder is 18.5" instead of 19.5". You may have some difficulties finding a jacket big enough to fit your shoulders without fitting like a tent everywhere else. Most 40-42L jackets I find range anywhere from 17.75" to 19.25" in the shoulder, so it may be tough finding something that meets your shoulder width.

Any chance that you recall the maker of the those in the 19" variety?

hmmm...sorry, not off the top of my head. You can try browsing through eBay - set up a search for all size 40L products in both the Blazers & Sportcoats and Suit sections, and it will bring up a huge amount of stuff. Then you can try taking a look at some of the brands that pop up....more and more sellers are getting better about giving measurements on suits and SC's now, so hopefully you can start getting a feel for which brands have larger shoulder measurements there.

You could try a slim 44L and get a tailor to take in on the sides if need be. 19 - 19.5" shoulders would be the norm on this size bracket. A 40" real chest measurement would mean the jacket could be taken as a very slim 44L (many fashion labels on their 54L /44L suits would have a pit to pit measurement around 22" rather than 23" - 24" which would be more the norm). Usually as a rule of thumb, you want the jacket to be 4" greater than your real chest measurement, so a slim 44L may do the trick with the right brand. You would also need a 10" drop, but you could make do with an 8" drop and again, get a tailor to help you out there.
