Do you ever feel like you've wasted money on clothing/clothing related items?

Have you ever bought something expensive but later never use it, it sits in the back of your closet and you regret it? Earlier this year I bought a navy blazer in 38R, and lately I feel like I want a 38S. I really feel like I should kick myself in the ass for wanting to buy the exact same shit just in different length.

I have to imagine this a universal "yes," especially as people develop their style. Sometimes the only way to see if something will work for you is to buy it and see. You get some misses that way but you learn.

Then there's the "Ebay factor," where something looks awesome on Ebay but then the measurements aren't quite right, the colors aren't what you thought, etc. I have any number of things that I wouldn't have pulled the trigger on in person but looked perfect online.

For me:
a pair of black Trickers. They're nice quality shoes, but a little small, clunky, and I find I just don't wear black shoes.
navy chalk stripe odd jacket. First jacket I bought as I was trying to dress nicer. Whoops.
Like ten pairs of pants from Ebay that are too damn big.

Of course, we are all guilty of wasting perfectly good money on stuff we rarely, if ever use. This is particularly more prevalent for a compulsive buyer or one who considers aesthetics over practicality.

I've bought shoes and sweaters that I've owned for a year or more and never yet worn -- but I don't consider the money wasted. I'll get around to them; other things are in flux, for now. In light of Klobber's comment, I freely admit I "consider aesthetics over practicality" but it doesn't bother me because I have two or three pairs of shoes (for example) that I think are the coolest thing since sliced bread and that I've worn a couple of times or less since buying, and they are ready to be busted out practically brand new looking for the right occasion whenever it comes. But I treat clothing as artistic consumption and expression both, whereas many people -- even on SF (god forbid) -- see it in more utilitarian terms.

Only if I don't wear it.

Discounting your requirement that it be expensive, whatever I buy from The Gap ends up being a regrettable purchase.

In general, anything that is today's fashion trend but not flattering will likely end up a regrettable purchase.

The one suit I got for my sister's wedding in 1985, then it stayed in the wardrobe for 20 years. The regret was that she got divorced less than a year later. Rather a waste of money. No pictures survive except maybe for a Betamax video in my father's attic.

Sadly yes. Fortunately, it hasn´t been that much. But I have bought some stuff that I haven´t used much and I know I´m never going to wear it. But I´ve changed. Now i only buy something if i´m sure it´s going to be worn a lot. Specially since I´m buying mostly online, and things that are not really cheap. I´m so through with buying at physical stores. There´s really nothing in any shops in town I would want to spend money on. Every time I see something that´s decent enough I say to myself: "Why waste money on that when you can save it to buy something you truly like?"

Yes, for much the same reasons Gibonious mentioned - with the additional compounding factor that sometimes ebay sellers don't measure correctly. But sometimes I've had it go the other way, too. I ebayed this Armani sportcoat a month or two ago for a pretty cheap price, because it was a gray with black and white windowpaning.

When it got here, it turns out it was actually an olive color, not gray. But I actually prefer the color, now that my brain's had a chance to adjust, since it adds a nice touch when worn with browns and tans.

Several pairs of shoes. As beautiful as they are, they've never been worn.

Expensive jeans that fit perfectly.

No matter what it seems that I shrink or expand to the point that they no longer look well. And they just stack up in the closet.

Depends how you look at it. I've certainly bought things that didn't work out, and seem to be wasted money. But, with the money I've saved buying things on heavy discount and on ebay and B&S here I'm certain that I have saved many times the amount wasted. I mean, sometimes you get lucky and get a nice Oxxford suit on ebay for like $40 BIN. Measurements seem right, so you buy it. If it doesn't work, you're out $40. If it does, you just saved yourself $1,760.
