^^

I was trying to be funny ('grown'), but clearly I failed. frown.gif

Yes, the cashmere fibres come from Mongolia.

This is pretty cool though (wild Kashmir goats in Wales): http://www.bbc.co.uk/wales/nature/galleries/mammals/9#egt

Thank you Apropos. Much useful information; succinctly written.

Hi-

The terms "gauge" and "ply" are often thrown around in shops in a confusing way. The term "gauge" refers to both the size/thickness of each yarn and also the number of stitches per inch in a knitted garment. Yarn gauge is mostly measured in microns- Cashmere, for example is usually 28 microns. Each yarn usually would consist of two ends of 28 thickness twisted together, making a single ply of 2/28. Lightweight cashmere sweaters are usually knitted either 12gauge (12 stitches per inch) using 1 ply of 2/28 or 9gauge (9 stitches per inch) using two plys of 2/28. The number of ends/plys can be increased all the way up to handknitting gauges.

The quality of the cashmere and the finished product really only show when made by an experienced knitter/spinner. I've felt raw (high quality) knitted cashmere before it was washed at the factory and it felt like shetland.

On the flip side, I've felt high quality lambswool, properly knitted and finished, and it rivaled cashmere's hand.

I kind of would like to revive this because I bought a relatively inexpensive merino wool knit shawl cardigan... and I think I like merino or lambswool wool better for everything other than scarves. They're cheaper, feel more durable, and give you a peace of mind that you don't care if something happens to it. Is it as soft? No, but I'm wearing it, I'm not feeling it (scarves being the exception here).

Reviving this thread because I have recently begun the search for new cashmere sweaters. To this point my "collection" (5 v-necks in staple colors and then a couple pullovers) has been from lower-end to middle-of-the-road manufacturers (think: J. Crew, PRL and Brooks Brothers). However, a few months ago I was able to find a Loro Piana Roadster pullover at an unbeatable deal. Purchasing this sweater has changed the way I look at cashmere.

Because I am more or less ignorant about cashmere, how it is made, how to spot good quality, etc, I decided to do some research. I started on SF, only to find that there was no really conclusive opinion or even objective standard. Because of this I have ventured out into the wilds of the internet to do some of my own research. I figured I'd share with the class.

Some students from Loyola did a project on Cariaggi cashmere production. For those of you that don't know of Cariaggi, it is known as one of the top Italian cashmere houses. Their report is not insanely detailed, but gives a good idea of the processes. It also has a pretty cool video.

I also stumbled across an organization called the Cashmere and Camel Hair Manufacturers Institute. This group has tasked themselves with inspecting the sheering, yarn production, weaving process and retailer behavior of all things cashmere. They provide detailed information of how the fibers are classified and certified. However, most importantly, they provide a list of the CCMI members who produce certified cashmere garments and accessories:

I was hoping my initial research might revive this thread and lead to discussion more specifically, or at least objectively, about what makes good cashmere and who's producing it. However, worst comes to worse, at least here are some starting points for those of us with no idea where to turn for information.
