Need help shopping for interview clothes

Thread Starter

Im moving from blue-collar work to white-collar work and need to get an outfit for interviews. I need pants, a button-down shirt and shoes. The only thing I already have is a tie (grey/silver color) and socks. I'd like the clothes to be a bit slim fitting as I am 5'9" and 140lbs. I have about $150 to spend.

What type of pants, shoes and shirt should I be looking at? I have very little experience with dressing "nice" as you can imagine how I regularly dressed as construction worker. It would also be nice if I can find them online.

Id like to stick to black pants and shoes but have idea what kind I need. I want it to be formal and professional but not too formal.

Are you sure you won't be needing a suit for interviews?

Yes, that question need to be answered first. Approximate location also is needed. Black shoes are right, black pants (or black jacket or black shirt) wrong. Dark gray for pants arguably is best. Most people probably would say the post should have been made to an existing thread.

Grey or navy suit. White shirt. Black shoes(the ones in your avatar ain't bad.) Tie varies.
Resume/haircut/shave/manicure(you were in construction) and some altoids.

I think you can get the gear you need at JAB on deep discount for $300-$350 - or try a place like Syms / Filene's Basement, Marshalls, etc (sticking with gray dress trousers, dress shirt, dress shoes, belt, dark gray dress socks and a tie).

Please don't take the above as an endorsement of the items or brands I've listed. Just some examples of how you can get things on sale that will help you to look appropriate for an interview. The items are not very well constructed and won't last you for an extended period of time if you wear them often.

I agree that a suit would be nice but you're going to be hard pressed to fine a suit, shoes, dress shirt, belt, socks and tie for $150... You will need closer to $500 to get that done.
