See my third post for revised question about a different suit...

Taking that much off from the shoulder would probably reduce the sleeve-cap enough to completely mess up the shoulders. You can probably say goodbye to any roping for a start.

Also, unless you've got freakishly short arms, I'm not sure I can imagine the sleeves being that long without the body also being way too long for you?

S&M is probably right.

Okay, I think my measuring might have been a little off. I think it's actually closer to 1-1/2" to 2". Is that doable from the shoulder while still maintaining the roping?

A great tailor can do anything.

Chances of you shortening a jacket from the shulder by 2" and come out satisfactory is close to ZERO, given the general lack of talented tailors.

Okay, new question: Looking to get OTR Tom Ford and need to go up to a 58 (Euro) to get the right shoulder width. Measurement is 48" exactly for the chest. My chest is 42" actual size. Is this type of tailoring in the chest possible or will it look funny taking it in that much?

Something doesn't sound right. Tom Ford generally does longer jacket bodies and you think the overall length is okay, yet the sleeves are too long by that much? I'm guessing the body will be very long on you.

So now you're saying that Tom Ford's already wide shoulders are too narrow for you in your correct size and that you need to go up to a size 48 US for a size 42 chest? Your shoulders are 3 sizes larger than your chest plus the already wide shoulders of Tom Ford jackets, and your arms are very short in comparison to your body? Can we see a picture of you?

This question refers to a different suit. The last one was a MTM for someone who apparently had ridiculously long arms/didn't like to show any cuff whatsoever. The best fit for my shoulders is 19" to 19-1/2" . From what I've seen on here and from trying them on, I get the impression that TF OTR for 52/42 is about 18-1/2" in the shoulder. The measurements for the suit I'm looking at (which is listed as a 58/48) is 19-1/2", which makes sense if my previous experience and what I've seen on here is correct.

Also, as far as I know, Tom Ford shoulders are actually on the narrow side. They look imposing, and are structured, but are supposed to hug the shoulder and actually contain very little padding. Could someone correct me if I'm wrong?

We must be measuring differently. My Zegna is 19" exactly from shoulder seam to shoulder seam and it fits perfectly. If a Tom Ford 40 is 19" across the shoulder, then it should fit (at least there). But when I tried on the 42 at the Tom Ford boutique it came nowhere near close to fitting the shoulder. I had to size up to a 44/46 before it started fitting in the shoulders.
