Speaking at Cornell - any thoughts on 'the look'

I found out yesterday I'm speaking and sitting on a panel discussion at Cornell on Friday.

It's a panel of architects and interior desicrators, by the way.

Shall I wear a full on suit look or something more casual such as a sport coat ensemble?

Anyone with personal experience of the campus? Any thoughts?

Barring any input I'll do the suit, btw.

Haha only because the Nard Dog went to Cornell. "I went to Cornell, you ever heard of it? (laughs) I graduated in four years. I never studied once. I was drunk the whole time, and I sang in the acappella group, 'Here Comes Treble.'"

You should also probably start your speech with that quote biggrin.gif

not sure in architecture... in medicine if you are lecturing in an institution other than yours is customary to wear a plain suit...

I'd stick to the suit as well. I'm in Economics and have seen Cornell faculty come to give talks at other institutions and they have worn suits. You can't go wrong with a suit.

you should wear a cornell branded sweat suit.

seriously, is this a real thread?

I think a sports coat breathes a more casual appeal as a business wardrobe. Try pairing it with corduroy trousers or denim.

Of course it's real.............

Part of dressing well is being appropriate for the occasion. Sure, one can just show up looking business like and presentable in a suit - it's always safe.

But these days I find that when I speak at many design related functions in the academic world the attire can be more casual than it once was. Ie. I see more sport coat ensembles these days.

Why be just great when with a little extra effort you can be great AND dead on appropriate?

In my experience the male teaching staff at Ivy League institutions are not the most sartorially inclined folks. That being said, the uniform most often worn seems to be an odd jacket, preferably tweed. (I'm not sure sure if that applies to business school guys though.) Of course, that doesn't mean you should try to dress like they do. I would think they'd expect someone from outside to come dressed more business-like. They realize things are different outside their academic world.

I vote suit.

Depends on the class size and format

less than 50 in normal classroom: jacket
more than 50 in auditorium: suit

If you're a certain type of architect, you'd no doubt wear a black t shirt and trousers by some unheard of designer from Antwerp and some weird, clear-framed specs.

Yes - the design community has long loved BLACK in all it's myriad incarnations............and consistently seems hell bent on being 'different'.

Couldn't say that I haven't been down those roads. But I'm pleased to say I've left that whole 'group think' behind.

These days I strive for a dapper but ever so slightly 'bent' business louche look more often than not.

Time permitting, I can rent you my Cornell Freshman sweater,
