Q: how to select fabric for long distance tailor?? (wwchan)

Hello all,

Hoping for some forum advice. I recently had a second suit commissioned from chan on their US tour. I'm hoping my pattern will be dialed in and I can just call in and order suits thereafter.

The question I have is regarding picking fabrics from here on in. Chan doesn't visit Vancouver or Seattle anymore, so visiting a city on his tour is too costly; however I like to see samples of fabric in the flesh. Chan indicated that they don't send out fabric swatches but will send pictures instead.

So what's the best way to select fabric in this situation?

You can request swatches directly from the merchants. Harrisons/Lesser and Smith Woollens are two that are known to send swatches to individuals upon request.

1. So it looks like I'm limited to fabrics for which merchants are willing to send swatches? I presume a tailor like Chan would be able to access these?

2. What is typically the cost associated with ordering these swatches?

Cheers,

Also, does anyone have any experience with contacting Smith? I found a telephone number and may be giving them a ring later this week.

That's right, online tailor usually will send you a few fabric samples from your choice. Sometimes pics show the pattern very clearly, but it's better to see and feel the fabric.
