Thick, Coarse Asian Hair -- what do i do?

I have wavy, thick, course asian hair and it's tough to manage. Being that it also grows straight out of my head when it's short (fro-like) and have to cut it every 3 weeks or so. Anyone having hairstyle recs that aren't played out? Products that help?

I've had a jar of this for... two years now? I get my half-asian hair cut in the "ivy cut" (either an 8-4-2 or 6-4-2 buzz) and throw a small bit of this to get a little bit of a direction to the top. Prevents the finger in lightsocket look, and doesn't really give too much sheen or slickness.

I was considering that but my head is slightly coned shape--very unattractive without hair to hide it all. Any other recommend styles?
