You guys are seriously overthinking it. I grew up in Kingston, and went to Montreal and Toronto, regularly. Kingston is not the coldest of the three places (that would be Montreal), but it is definitely the wettest. Traction, traction is not the problem. Anything with a lug sole is going to be just fine under nearly all conditions, i.e., will work for anything except for black ice, in which case, tread carefully, because unless you are wearing crampons, you are probably fucked, though my parents swear by those wire thingees. It's the wet. If you are going to be over ankle deep in snow, nothing other than Sorels will do. If you are walking in anything else, any pair of waterproofed boots (I use Snoseal) are going to be just fine, unless you decide that you want to stomp into every slush pool in the city, in which case, you need something like a pair of Vasque Sundowners that have been further waterproofed.

This is not as bad as those people from LA who insist that you need a pair of New Balances to walk around NYC, but it's approaching it.

Overthinking it _massively.

I grew up in a small village in the northern part of Norway. We get 30-40 below (celcius). Have a nice pair of _winter_ boots for when you are going to dig out your car, play in the snow with your kids or go for a hike. Ordinary outdoor leather shoes with rubber soles, a good layer of leather conditioner and woolen socks will suffice for everything else.

Can anyone recommend an alternative to these? I have no idea about the quality of Ugg boots, but I assume I can do better. Looking for something very similar: black, a little higher than regular ankle boots, and no moc toe. Contrast sole and shearling would be nice.

I was actually thinking that one too, but whats holding me is the smell the boots keep... I happened to smell a girls season old ugg boots once (no judge please) and if i ever become misogynistic half the reason would be how bad it smelled.

I sent you a PM a little while ago regarding affiliates, but never heard back from you. Are you the peson to be talking to? If you can let me know that would be great.

Good advice on the boots! If I'm going to be more then ankle deep in snow, hopefully I'll be wearing snowboard boots :slayer:

Thinking about getting a pair of Danner Fort Lewis boots. Insulated combat boots seem pretty hard to find. Any other good-looking options out there?

You can't go wrong with either... both are fantastic boots.

Would this actually work? I'm just looking for something decent looking that will give me some traction during the winter. The city I'll be living in does a piss poor job of clearing ice.

yes, the sole of the Bayfield is 100% rubber/lug soul. not huge lugs but it should be fine in all winter conditions.

as LA Guy and others have said, there are basically 2 categories of winter boots:

1. boots you will go out and shovel / sled / walk around in a blizzard in. to me, you need something like Bean Boots or Sorels or something in this category for these situations
2. boots you will wear in the normal day to day of December - March or so. something like the Bayfield I pictured, or an Indy boot with commando sole, should be all you need. the sole (something with lugs preferably) being most important. I will coat with sno seal or something similar probably as well

mine arrive today!

I have the Meindl Gastein GTX. They have a nice soft sheepskin lining. My go to winter boots:

great thread so far everybody. I'll be moving from CA to NYC in about a month and I've been pulling my hair out trying to find stylish winter boots that don't make me look like I'm duck hunting. So far these are my two favorites and any info/advice would be helpful. Do you guys think these would hold up walking around Manhattan to and from work in the slush/snow? I would most likely change to dress shoes at work but still want a classy boot.

^#1 choice: Rockport Break Trail, Cap Toe $185. (Ive read mixed reviews on Rockports) has a flannel lining and I'm assuming its mildly water-resistant. I would definitely hit these with some sno-seal. love the look of this one.

^#2 choice: The Montgomery, by UGG $165. Looks like a very well made boot, but its 1/2 canvas and somehow the website says its "waterproof" which I doubt. Some type of fuzzy lining but not sheep skin.

Ugg are made in China, and the animal they came from was probably skinned alive for its fur.

I steer clear of 'Made in China' products when it comes to animal skins.
