I just ordered these as I was looking for something unique for quite some time. Just curious how other SF'ers feel about them.

Yay or nay?

Please don't, if only for the human beings around you that have to see you wear those monstrosities.

I could see Americans wearing something like that.

If I liked tassel loafers at all, I would like them. But I don't.

I like and wear tassled loafers but these look cheap to me and they would look even cheaper with wear. That is my gut reaction.

Seriously, of all the words that come to mind, cheap would be way, way down on the list.

If they were all suede, I would give thumbs up. As per Man of Lint, I agree they look nasty.

Since you have already ordered them, I will say "brave man". You are correct, they are different, just not different in a good way.

But the most important person to ask for the YAY or NAY opinion is yourself. I assume you consider them a YAY or else you would not have pulled the trigger on them. Unless you felt compelled to try something different and they were cheap enough relative to your income for you to take a gamble.

yes cheap, they remind me of 35 year old Florsheim loafers...the ugly ones, not the nice ones.

haha - very observant. These will definitely not be my everyday shoes so I don't mind taking a gamble on them. I was travelling this summer to NYC, London, Rome, Paris, Madrid and feverishly looking everywhere for some new shoes (Lobb, EG, Corneliani, Santoni, Sutor Mantellassi, Carmina, Paul Stuart, Jermyn Street, etc - all the SF approved places) and couldn't find anything that captured my imagination (at least not in my price range - if money were no object I'd buy a few pairs of berluti) I spotted these in the Gucci boutique in every city I was in and while I hated them at first, the more I saw them, the more I liked them.

For good measure - I also ordered this similar pair from Gucci, but in a much more palatable double-monk design. I know Gucci will never be SF-approved but I always like to see the reaction anyways. Personally I've been impressed by the quality of Gucci's shoe offerings over the last few seasons - most of it is still glued junk, but about 1/3 of the collection is blake stitched or goodyear welted with some exceptional patinas.

Hitting the big stores, I hope you have fun. Worry less about getting brands that are SF approved, but rather worry more on getting shoes that you really like. Its your money dude laugh.gif

BTW, a recent thread on SF put paid to the belief here that all Gucci is sub standard. Like many fashion brands, Gucci have various levels of quality. At the upper end, quality as good as anything out there, at lower end, quality absolute junk. Most here know that though, but there is a sub-culture which equates all fashion branded stuff = junk. This is often true, just not always true.

I approve of the shoes in your link - they are fairly nice. I would give them a 7/10.

Indeed the loafers aren't to my taste, but those monkstraps are.
I've handled those monk straps in person and was quite disillusioned to find that the straps are non-functional. They're merely decoration. I have a couple pairs of obligatory Guccis (all horsebits) that I wear all the time and love. I cannot, however, cosign the designs of these. Then again I don't think either shoe was designed with a preppy/trad sensibility in mind.

Either way, if you're happy then wear them in good health.
