Finally, AE's brown shell strands vs RL Marlow PTB:

They sure are well cared for.

I'm also impressed how well you know your fit/size as all in all they are creasing/rolling nicely far back from the toe.

Well done.

thank you -let's just say my local AE Store knows me.  I've been lucky with the size and AE lasts fit me well generally.  I only need to move widths slightly on a few lasts.

As far as care regimen, I just follow the venerable Mac method, but add AE cordovan cream approximately once per year.

I think AE does the classic shell models very well. I just wish they would set the toe medallion further back for the MacNeil.

thanks!  I know, I've been looking for a decent deal on a pair of black Cambridge for a good while, but that's on the back burner as I recently got a pair of black shell PTBs that also fill a similar void, and I've been shopping for boots in preparation for the winter.  I agree with the medallion, but it's not that bad in person.

Nice collection Bucks - you can polish them during the MI game to take your mind off it.

Honestly this is one of the better collection of shells i've seen. AE's lasts seem pretty sleek compared to Alden's.

Strand vs Marlow

very well played.

imo, the marlow doesn't look like a keeper, though.

How high are they if you don't mind measuring? And how did you size them? Would you be able to compare their sizes to Alden, C&J, or AS? Is this the Robert last or another? The website doesn't seem to list the Robert, but that seemed to be the igent's preferred round toe from Carmina.

Sorry I haven't gotten to this question in the thread until now---thanks for PMing me so I could address it to you sooner! I was actually looking for brown bal boots with rubber soles, but those apparently do not exist. These Carminas, however, more than suffice!

For posterity: Yep, these are the 80184 in light cognac. 1 1/4" heel, 8" total height (including heel), 3-3 1/4" wide tongue. I usually wear a US 9 or narrow 9.5, and these 8.5s fit me well! I lace them pretty much as tightly as possible, but I think an 8 would probably be too small. Having glanced at the side of their box and seen that it says "Oscar," I believe that is their last! Unfortunately, I can't compare them to Alden, C&J, or AS.

EDIT: To add last information.

Is there an online shoe that sales Carmina and Vass shoes? There websites offer little help at finding a place to actually see the different shoes.

+1 I'd like to pick up a LW but I won't buy the Alden version because I hate the Barrie last. There's just something off about the MacNeil.

I know this is a non-Alden thread, but just FYI if you can wear a narrow size on the Barrie, getting a C width results in a much more attractive shoe. NAMOR has some shell Ravello Alden boots on the Barrie in a C width and they look terrific.

Thanks for the suggestion. I'd need to go down to at least a B width, and even that might not work. The Barrie is a shitty fitting last. The split between heel width and toe box width is just too small. Since that split doesn't change when you go down a width, I doubt any size would fit me. Frankly, I'm tired of spending money trying to make these ridiculous lasts sort of work for me. If I get a longwing, it won't be from Alden.

^ Ah, very narrow feet then. Good luck! Let me know if you find another comparably nice longwing around. (If you come across sizes that don't work for you, I'm a U.S. 10.5D TTS... wink.gif )
