It is true, at least for the #8. After the shoe is completed, it is painted with a purple dye. You can see the purple leaking through the eyelets and any stitch holes. I suspect that's true for Ravello and Cigar as well. I'm not sure about Whiskey (mine don't have any dye running through to the inside) or black.
One other thing about C&J shell. The Whiskey used on my unlined Harvards has almost no creasing. It's very odd.
