Been there, done that. Ended up with getting two plantar warts/verrucas from the gym showers. Rather painful as well. Ever since then I've always tried to wear some kind of footwear, usually plastic flip-flops or shower shoes when using public or shared showers.

I know some guys who have their work shoes and their dress shoes, and others who have an entire shoe closet. I'd say for me the bare minimum would be:
Dress shoes (one matching black, one matching brown), slightly cheaper dress shoes (for anywhere that beer is spilled), boots for the cold season, running sneakers, casual sneakers, boat shoes (or other slip-on) and flip flops.

It really all depends upon your age and what you do. Someone in HS or college is going to be wearing a lot of casual or sports type shoes and having mostly dress shoes may just be a waste where you may not wear them very much. An older man who works as a lawyer may have a high % of dress shoes because he wears them all of the time and is  constantly using them although he too would have casual.

That is what (would have) made this a fun exercise in social comparisons on the subjective notion of "necessity" as regards footwear. >sigh<

I think flip flops are a must have. It depends on where you live and what your doing.
