What are the most essential types of shoes for a man to own?

If all your shoes were suddenly taken from you. What shoe types would you have to own (and how many) before you thought of your collection as "adequate for most occasions."

I know some guys who have their work shoes and their dress shoes, and others who have an entire shoe closet. I'd say for me the bare minimum would be:

Dress shoes (one matching black, one matching brown), slightly cheaper dress shoes (for anywhere that beer is spilled), boots for the cold season, running sneakers, casual sneakers, boat shoes (or other slip-on) and flip flops.

You really consider flip-flops an absolutely essential shoe?  GTFO.

Not trying to be a contrarian, but it depends on where you live.

This topic really has been done to death. Use the search function, OP.

Re: flip flops.... (maybe off topic but your grossed-out condemnation is welcome...)

I have to admit I don't understand why many so strongly dislike flip flops. They're casual. They're not MC, they're not SW, but they're useful, right? I walk around the house in my bare feet, and if I want to step outside to the grocery (a 2-minute walk), I can just slip on flip flops. In the summer of course. I wear them with shorts and a polo shirt, thats about as MC as they get...

I don't think feet are gross, I don't think my feet are gross... maybe I'll come to understand this eventually and throw my flip flops out forever, but until then... ??? shog[1].gif

Of course in every case besides the beach, I guess a loafer or boat shoe is better, but still I don't hate flip flops.... Maybe I'm imagining the wide disdain more than is really there...

At this point in my life I would get nothing but brown or burgundy for a while. I will eventually need a black shoe fro wedding/funerals etc, but not right now.

Wort is often very hot. I wouldn't want boiling wort on my feet either. On the other hand once fermented it's quite nice.

A good flipflop, in a warm climate, will work on almost any occasion where socks are forbidden or just unnecessary, which, admittedly, are few. Beach trips, showering, around the house, or when you're in one of those "go to hell" moods. I agree that boat shoes/loafers are generally more acceptable when a person wants to be presentable. But if I'm just walking to the market to get eggs for Sunday morning breakfast, I could give a rat's ass who sees my feet. The AEs can stay on the rack.

The most essential: comfortable. (Or in some settings: protective) The rest is negotiable.

If I were to suddenly lose all of my shoes, say to theft or fire, I would opt for a pair that are very comfortable and can be worn with jeans or a suit since they would probably be my only pair for a while. Then I would try to get:
A dark brown bal, a chestnut bal and then reevaluate my need for more pairs.

Been showering barefoot in gym locker rooms 3-5 times a week for about 45 years now. Never had warts or athlete's foot - not even once.

I'd rather take my chances than mess round with wet flip flops in this setting.

Have I just been very lucky?
