How to tell the difference between gray flannel trousers and orphaned gray suit pants when thrifting

The title says it all. How can I tell from labels, feel of fabric, construction, etc? Sorry if this is a no-brainer, but I'm new to all this. I'm notorious for buying orphaned suit pieces thinking that they are actually things. frown.gif

If they are plain colored then pants are pants.

With Pants it basically doesn't matter.

Pants can be any colour in the entire world, and only become "A Suit" when you add a jacket. Jackets on the other hand are cut differently to SC's and as such can become orphaned.

You can't save by intuition. Stick around and learn.

Buy new and avoid the problem.

My call as a noob is that if pants have a distinctive pattern, a pin or chalk stripe, a check or plaid, they very well may be part of a suit.

This is stuff that happens in a thrift. A jacket that has pin / chalk stripe, plaid, distinctive tweed - get over to the pants rack and see if we can find the other half. Pants, the same thing. The orphaned half never looks right wit de jeans / blazer.

Use your eye. If the pants are grey flannel, they may be part of a suit. Go look for the jacket, but if it's not there, who cares? It's grey flannel pants. Main thing, if they fit.
