Fashion Emergency I NEEDHelp

Hello Forum I am a hairdresser in Denver. I wear all black to work, with some shoes i got at Walmart for 8 dollars. I love wearing all black its very hard to go wrong and it creates a dress code scenario for the salon, and aside from my shoes, i am very Happy with what i wear to work.

Now here is the Problem. When i go out to bars or go out on a date i dress like a 17 year old boy (yes complete with goofy flannel shirt). i recently saw "crazy stupid love" and aside from it being cheesy, Ryan Gossling dressed Phenomenally. It made me realize i got to tart dressing like a big boy now. It is hurting my business and making me look Juvenile. Anyway i set aside $1k for a new wardrobe. nothing too extensive maybe a couple shirts a few different coloured pants, and a couple diffrnt shoes. Something i can mix and match and not look like i am repeating outfits often. now I WAS going to go to Nordstrom but i dont want to blow a lot of money on crap (i am sure there are better options in Downtown Denver).

PLEASE HELP. i want to turn heads when i walk into the bar. I want to hand out my card with confidence, and yes i want to impress my beautiful (very fashionable) girlfriend

I'll bite.

You see, style is personal. There are things that will look good on most people, but in the end, your clothes have to reflect you. We (internet strangers) can't just tell what you should wear. There really is no easy way or a short cut to becoming well dressed.

There are a couple of things that could instantly make you dress a bit better (proper denim, desert boots), but for the most part you'll have to discover yourself.

Also, having a bunch of money to burn is good, but don't do it all so fast. Your views on what looks good (on you) will change over time. If you buy a whole 1000$ wardrobe today, you probably will be disappointed in a couple of months.

My tip, just lurk on this forum and you'll slowly discover.

+1

Seeing some pics would help to see where your style direction is usually headed, and what could be "corrected" or modified to suit what you are looking for.

There certain staples in a men´s wardrobe, like a navy blazer, a solid pair of jeans, a white button down, penny loafers, brown lace ups, v-neck sweater, etc...

This is my "go to" outfit.

I am a hairdresser i do kinda know what looks good (not reflective of my outfit) i have just been dead beat broke and uncaring until now. and now i care. I have a big Hair convention this weekend and i am really sick of not being taken seriously

The shirt isn't horrible, but it looks cheap. The shoes look terrible. The bracelets might mean something to you, but they look like a teenager's accessories. Then you are looking for where to find slim-fitting items like what the character wears well, at reasonable prices? By the way, loafers don't seem right for a hairdresser - too much standing. Perhaps some pants from places like J. Crew, but the other details are trickier. Measurements haven't been provided.

There we go much better. This is what i wore today. I also got a new vest as well as some different coloured dress pants and a few other shirt options. The gentleman at the store gave me a little lesson on mix and match and it was very simple. I must say how odd it is, people treat me different when I'm nicely dressed. Thank you all for the help. have a lovely weekend to all, i know i am going to.

Regards,

Garrett

I could swag you out for a thousand bucks with a few solid pieces to make an outfit that you'll want to wear day after day. What are you gonna do about winter though? Isn't cold out there? You were talking about shirts and some pants, what else?

Here's what I'm thinking, rough draft;

-TOJ Minimalist DR or Quilt DR in black lamb - $710
-some AA white v-necks at wholesale from one of those printer's websites, like $5 each, say 10, so $50
-a cheaper blue jean than APC, maybe a pair of N&F skinny guys (?) (no experience but just my guess) - $125'ish
-a cheap black overdye or black denim skinny jean, any brand, new or used - say $50
-all-black Chuck Taylor highs, $30-40?

enough money leftover for a cheap H+M cardigan and a belt or something, things you can throw away and build on. So rarely does someone come along actually looking like that they should be wearing a TOJ DR, but you're skinny, have the long hair, good start.
