Cleaning & restoring thrift or consignment store purchases. What do you do about condition?

A fair number of threads on Style Forum involve fine garments bought at a physical or online thrift or consignment store.

Typically, the questions involve issues of fair price, fit, construction, tailoring, etc. What I have noticed is that very few threads involve issues of condition.

So I was curious how SFers handle the cleaning and restoration of those garments, given the fact that many of these garments will surely exhibit symptoms of poor care.... heavy creasing, musty/dank odor, perspiration odor, cigarette/cigar odor, soot stains, rust stains, water and beverage stains, perspiration stains (underarms), yellowed lining, dingy outer fabric, unravelling seams at underarms and vents, distorted interfacing in collar and cuffs, etc.

Do you attempt to "restore" the garment yourself? Drop it off at your local dry cleaner? Send it to a restoration dry cleaner? What results do you experience?

To give you a sense of what I mean by "cleaning and restoration", consider this example of an Oxxford Clothes silk sport coat I completed last week......

(Sorry, my link has AGAIN been "blocked" by Style Forum's new software. Please click on the www.ravefabricare.com link below and enter "the cleaning and restoration of an Oxxford Clothes sport coat" in the search engine in the top right corner. Thanks. Stu.)

You forgot to list drool, blood, urine and feces.
If a garment has this many issues, why buy it in the first place?

Easy. I avoid the items with those problems and take the ones in mint or excellent condition. I see too many high quality high end goods without problems, even decades old, and even with tags attached, to want to spend time dealing with the ones with problems.

I have inspected items at estate sales, stores, etc., purchased these items, and upon a later inspection have found small problems that I missed. In those cases, I either send the item out to a professional or just donate the item. One has to factor in the cost of their own time when making the decision.
