Matching 'the' Watch to the Suit

Recently, we have had a few clients inquire about how to correctly match their watch to the suit, or vice versa. As a watch aficionado myself (or at least I aspire to be), I had some thoughts, but all were very basic suggestions.

The obvious is a formal watch with a formal suit, casual with casual, etc, etc. Beyond the obvious, does anyone have some concrete suggestions or thoughts to pass on?

Is gold appropriate at some times and not others? When is silver best? Or what about large pieces/faces versus small pieces?

I am admittedly quite new to the forum so apologies if I missed a thread that addressed this from the searches I performed.

For starters, I wear my most formal watch, a black and gold Rado, only with dark suits and to business formal occasions. I don't wear the watch to casual events or dress. Is it appropriate to wear this watch with a plaid suit for example? Is a silver watch best to match with a plaid suit?

Any thoughts would great!

It's really nothing more than the watch color going with the wearer's skin color and complementing his clothes color. I'd say that silver colored watches go better with black, blue or grey suits whereas gold or two tone goes better with more earthy tones like brown or tan. Non-metal bracelet will of course again change the whole thing.

I think the colour of the metal itself is preference. I personally don't like the look of gold and all my watches are silver in colour. As for formality, it is primarliy determined by face, size and thickness of the watch. There are other threads already discussing this, but the simplest way to put is, the less busy, the thinner the smaller the watch, the more formal it is.

Dial color also comes into play I would think, with a lighter dial being more formal.

Thanks guys for answering the question so quickly and with all of the info. I think you're correct about matching the bands and face to the complexion of the wearer.

But as always, it always defaults to personal style.

Thanks again for sharing your expertise.

Perfect, all I need is an extra $20k+, or a trip to Canal St in NYC and about $40 to pick up a Patek Philippe. As their ad campaign states, I wouldn't own the PP, I would only be holding onto it for the next generation.

That is a very beautiful watch.

The style looks almost like it's on a Mad Men episode, a 'throwback' to past styles. I do mean that as a compliment.
