i am looking at getting a camera. I want something to take photos while traveling.

I am not camera savvy, so i dont see my self buying a dslr with multiple lenses. I would like something decent under $500.

do you guys have any experience with any of the cameras below?

Canon PowerShot SX30 IS
Sony Cybershot DSC-HX100V
Nikon Coolpix P100
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ100

All are the wrong choice.

under $500?

I just bought a Panasonic LX5 and I'm more than happy. No idea what it costs in US, but it is small - looks decent and takes good photos (for my use anyways).

+1 on the Canons. I love my s90. Small, great pictures and excellent in low light conditions. You can get better pictures with a dSLR, but they get pretty bulky when you're traveling. I like that I never debate about whether or not to take the s90.

What are you getting?

Excuse the shameless self-promotion, but I'm selling a practically brand new S95 for under MSRP + tax/shipping. Used it on my trip to Thailand, but I'm looking to upgrade to a DSLR since I'm not concerned about size anymore. See my signature. Many would argue the Canon S9"x" is the best line of compact point and shoots.

And to expand, I did a lot of research on this in terms of Point and Shoots under $500.

Those cameras you listed are NOT a good idea, there's much better out there. Look at:

Canon S95
Panasonic Lumix LX-5
Nikon P7000 (Although quite large)
Canon G12 (Althouh quite large)

You may also want to look into Micro 4/3 or Mirrorless DSLR cameras for slightly a bit more money like

Sony Alpha NEX-C3
Sony Alpha NEX-5N
Panasonic Lumix GF3
Olympus E-P3 / E-PL3 / E-PM1
