jacket fit question

So, I'm completely new at the attempting to look nice thing. Bought this jacket on eBay recently and I can't decide whether it fits or not, especially in the shoulders. They seem a bit wide, but maybe I'm overthinking it.

Any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

From the front view, the waist (especially the lower waist to prevent the hip flare) needs to be taken in from the back. The back side, however, is a huge mess. The shoulders are way too large, and the vent is pulling open.

If I may make a suggestion for future reference - try sticking to double vented jackets. They generally fit better, walk better, and sit better - in my opinion, look better too.

The original single vent was designed for riding horses, and the style has 'continued' for it is easier and less expensive for manufacturers to build jackets with a single vent.

Apologies if my suggestion was out of line.

HOW DARE YOU MAKE A SUGGESTION NOT DIRECTLY RELATED TO MY QUESTION!!!!! SO HELP ME I WILL HUNT YOU DOWN AND...

Just kidding. The jury's out for me on double-vented. I'm uber-liberal in most ways but I'm discovering that when it comes to clothes, my preferences run to the conservative side. Perhaps it's the deep, deep WASP roots and the fact that half of my family dresses, with no self-awareness at all, like a trad-obsessed style blogger's dream. Double-vented just looks too...well, too stylish.

Anyway, thanks for the input.

Interesting first post, though, considering you've been around for over a year?

Yes, I must admit I joined long ago, but didn't make any posts and subsequently forgot about it. I thought I should give it another go.

I'm glad that an "uber-lib" can take notes from an "ultra-conservative" too. smile.gif

Your family could fit right into our blog as you mentioned - but we do cover much more than just conservative dress.

If you want different in the vent side - try the ventless. Typically reserved for tuxedos, the ventless sportcoat or suit/jacket will stand out for it is more form fitting and better lines.

Okay, I thought I replied to you, and the post is listed in my 'post count,' but it doesn't appear on the thread. So if my posting comes up twice, then sorry.

Anyways, I am glad that an "uber-lib" can engage and take notes from an "ultra-conservative." Truly progress for all.

As per your suggestion, I think your family would fit in well with our conversations about suits on our blog! (I mean that as a compliment too)

On a side note, have you ever considered going ventless? Those are usually reserved for tuxedos but can look quite nice and form fitting for a sportcoat as it hugs the body and is trimming. I am not sure if you would consider that as having 'too much style.'

As per my joining and this was first [set of] posts - I joined many months ago, didn't do much, and then forgot about it. Thought I would give it another go.
