Taking in waist of shirt: where should you start narrowing it?

I'm going to preface this by saying I'm sort of into bodybuilding, so my proportions are generally an above average chest/shoulders, but narrow waist. So I have some XL shirts I want to try getting tailored and taken in at the waist. They fit well on the chest/shoulders, but balloon out down towards the waist. How far down the shirts do I start to get them taken in if I want to maintain room for a larger chest/shoulder fit?

I would think if you brought your shirts to a good local tailor, he or she would be able to take them in for you at the waist.

The chest cannot easily be brought in without also making the arm-hole smaller and requiring that the sleeve is also reduced. Normally when tapering a shirt the chest would be left the same but tapered in from the underarm point down to the required circumference at the waist point. This shouldn't have much effect on the fit of the chest, and certainly not on the fit of the shoulders.

If you have a particularly large drop you can also have darts placed in the back, rather than taking all the required suppression from the side-seams.

Try the shirt on at the tailor's and have him pin it.
That's the best way to get it right.
