Question about tailoring prices for shirts.

Where I used to live, Florida, my local tailor would bring in the sides of my shirts for $7, this was about 6 months ago.
I recently finished losing about 20 pounds that I've had while in a wheel chair for the past 2 years(finally back to walking 9 months ago and working out about 3 months ago), and was looking to get my shirts all taken in to fit my new frame.
Well, I now live in VA and I just called a tailor nearby and they quoted me $35 to take in the sides of a shirt.
I have probably 40 shirts to take in, so that seems like a ridiculous price to me?
Well I thought they were joking or something, I don't know, so I called up another one, and they said their shirt tailoring starts at $45.
I called every Tailor and Dry Cleaner within 15 miles and not a single one went below the $35 dollar range.

It would literally be cheaper for me to buy round trip tickets to the dry cleaner down in Florida and then pay for the shirts to be shipped back to me.

So does my alterations guy in Florida rip himself off here?
Or is my current location ripping people off?
Or have you all noticed a similarly vast difference in alterations prices when you travel/move?

Sorry for the rant portion of my question, I suppose that I'm just pretty upset that I won't be getting the alterations I want right yet.

Maybe your guy in Florida wasn't doing it properly; just single-stitching down the seams rather than doing it properly by flat-felling them?

$45 does seem quite expensive, but $7 seems suspiciously cheap.

He would keep them as double seam as far as I can tell.

I think I'm going to fly down there and have him do it again, save myself some money. Sucks to add another 100 bucks to my cost like that for the tickets, but cheaper than adding the 1200$ premium VA/DC tailors seem to want to add.

I see you are in Cambridge, I used to live there, north east a bit right next door to st andrews chesterton, was the greatest 2 years of my life.
