Tailor power, or how I learned what to get right

I have a sinking feeling this thread has already been played out like a first suit thread on this forum. No doubt the equivalent of a "charcoal grew, notch lapel, single breast, two button" thing lies somewhere in the archives awaiting a search.

So recently I did something that has gotten me more compliments than any single aesthetic decision I have ever made (with the exception of hours at the gym), and it was also one of the cheapest:

I had all my shirts fitted by taking in the sides and raising the armhole. This simple operation costs about $14/pop.

It is really astounding. A simple shirt and people say things like "sharp", or "when did you start dressing up" or "who has been dressing you lately."

Best of all, nobody can tell why it looks good. They get some vague sense of mastery, money, etc and I am sure it all comes down to the fit.

Here is the thing: I am greedy for more. Should I get something else fitted? It is standard to take a suit to the tailor and have it adjusted but I am talking about Pants.

Is there something one does to pants that make them better? I often hem pants but should they also be fitted? The most common thing I do is have them hemmed, and the second most common thing I do is have pleats removed.

Anybody else have some secret weapons to share?

If you are just looking for a slimmer fit in general, you can ask to have the legs narrowed (this is done by taking in the inseam), or just tapered (narrowed from about the knee down).

If you get your pants narrowed too much, you are also going to loose some of the 'rise', or the measurement from your crotch to the top of your waistband.

The warning to heed (indicated by Quadcammer's response) is that you can easily go too far if you are over-zealous. If your trousers are too narrow and the rise is too short, you will have issues with your shirt riding up all over again, and women will be having a good laugh at your expense as they will be able to see your junk.

Proceed with caution.

I do think fitted suits look better.

Obviously, and not to be rude, this is not the case if you are fat.

But don't get mad at others if this is the case.
