Back in the 60's he was part of the last group of actors who were part of the 'studio system'. Young promising actors were put on salary by the film studios then sent to 'movie star' school'. They were taught etiquette, how to dress, how to dance, plastic surgery, how to handle the press, the public, etc.
I think Sam Elliot and Harrison Ford were also in that group.
