I love and hate tipping. If you leave a tip at the end, the server can't show their appreciation. My Friend from New Orleans taught me how to tip at the beginning of a meal or event. This can often result in amazing service, free drinks and food or twice as much asphalt on your road than what you paid for.

The English tip worst because we know that if a meal is "worth" something, then it should be priced as such. Fuck paying extra just for fun.

What, was "I don't care if you're black, white, brown, or purple" busy? Was "I have lots of black/white friends" taking a break?

When you applied for school, did the "race" part flummox you? It must've been hard, looking at the application and not being able to pick a race because you had no idea what it was. And when you chose a SF handle, I bet all the other names were picked, so you just had to pick "BlackKidLA", right?

And for the record, I'm just going to respond to your comments in this thread, not your protests in the Anglo fat wives thread, the Asian penor thread, the African-American woman appreciation thread, the.......

But the tip goes to the waiter, whereas the price of the meal goes (almost entirely) to the owner/manager/nontipped staff.

No, you can't just toss money. You have to have a kind of moment of understanding.

If I am entertaining clients, I will go into a bar, introduce myself to the bartender, say something like "I'm entertaining some clients and I hope you can help me out tonight". I live on a private road. The cost for the neighbors to repave it was like $180K. The specs were 4" of asphalt. I headed the committee to get it done. On the first day of work, I went out to the foreman of the crew. I told him how much I appreciated his work (they had just started) and I looked him in the eye and said 'Thank you very much" and gave him $400 and said to share it with his crew. I then said, "Hey, there are a few areas here that could use a little attention. He was happy to help. He then started to adjust the amount of asphalt from 4" to 6-8" in many areas. They ran out of asphalt trucks several times over two days of work. That $400 probably bought $15K of asphault on-the-house.

I've got a lot more of these....

Fascinating. I could see that working at a bar, but how do you swing that with a waiter if you're sitting down for dinner?

In India, most restaurants these days impose a 10% service charge. This is different from the govt taxes and go to the restaurant management. In the few restaurants, which do not impose the mandatory service charge, I usually leave between 10-15% which I assume goes to the waiting/kitchen staff. In the restaurants where they charge service charge, I leave around 5% mostly because of the guilt as leaving nothing for the waiting staff seems stingy but I dont want to leave more as already paid 10% with the bill. It is the waiting staff's problem that the management is greedy and took their tips and made it into a service charge and didnt share it with them. 

 

I have followed the tipping threads on and off and have always got the impression that Americans are a little obsessed with tipping. Of course, it was possible that I am extremely stingy. So, I asked my facebook friends, how much they leave in restaurants where there is a mandatory service charge. All said that they leave zero, with the reasoning, if the restaurant is charging for service through the service charge, why should they leave a tip. If the discretionary amount has been institutionalized by the establishment, why is there an  expectation of tips by the staff. 

 

It turned out that I was the only one of my facebook friends who was leaving anything. Most just pay the exact amount of bill by CC so the question of change does not arise. 

 

Regardless of what Indians do in India, Indians in America should be doing what local customs and culture dictate.
