So, we were planning on heading up for one day, just to shop in the coming weeks - where would you recommend? Hotels.com and TripAdvisor have yielded 2 places. I figure some of the more seasons WC folks would have an suggestion.

Thanks.

There are a couple of joints around Bear Mountain but I prefer to drive to Hyde Parke and hit the CIA . I've stayed at the Inn the Woods and le Petit Chateau Inn, both are quite enjoyable.

Thanks Tomasso. That's actually a pretty darned good idea in reference to the CIA. What would be of interest there outside of the restaurants? Which restaurant, as well? I see 6 on their webpage.

Do what you want with this info -- i know it's not exactly what you're looking for, but when I was up there we drove away from Highway 87, stopped at a gas station and asked about restaurants. We were directed to a delicious little seafood/steak place -- decor looks like the inside of a house. Everyone in my party was very sated with their meal and at good prices too. I guess if you're up there just ask "a local" about a seafood place about 10-15 min drive away from Woodbury Commons.

The CIA is located in Hyde Park and that means FDR. There are also tours of a couple of America's great homes, including the Vanderbilt Mansion. The U.S. Military Academy at West Point is in the general vicinity as well. Check out this site . It would really take a long weekend to do the Hudson Valley right, and Fall is the best season.

As for the CIA restaurants, they're all good but different, as described on the website.

I'm pretty sure Jan 1st both Saks Off & Neiman are having huge sales.

Was there yesterday to bring back some stuff i got for the holidays. Saks had 25% off your entire purchase from 6am-12. The sale runs today also.

There is an inn and a spa here too

http://www.monteverderestaurant.com/inn.html

I was there for lunch Friday. Actually made reservation for about 20 of my colleagues for xmas lunch. All but one praised the choice. The lone dissenter was a vegan, and their vegan offerings may not be in the same league as their regular offerings.

Short drive to the bear mountain bridge and then to woodburrrrrry commons.

My wife and I enjoy the food at MonteVerde. I think the rooms and spa are hideously over priced. One interesting option if you are going is to stay at the Hotel Thayer at West Point. You can combine with a tour of the Academy. See http://www.thethayerhotel.com

I have not stayed there but I think you are right. The food, however is exceptional at those prices. (SF get together there to coincide with their next Westchester restaurant week + trip to woodbury ?????) However, I discourage ordering 18 steaks at a single go. These were a notch or two lower than when we had ordered just a few on a single order.

Staying at the Thayer, with escalated security may require you to bring additional documentation etc (i.e. for vehicle). May be worth calling ahead and checking.

If you go in the late Spring to early Autumn, sit outside in the covered area. They do a very nice grill menu and the views are spectacular. A cheaper option for very basic motel would be in Peekskill at the intersection of Rtes 9 & 6. Probably under $100.00 for the nite, but just a motel.

The CIA should be a must do if you're interested in food. I have taken the tour of their facilities (lead by students) and eaten dinner in their French dining room. Recommend you book ahead as the more familiar cuisine dining rooms (e.g., Italian and American) fill quickly with bus/tour operators. A good value.

You also cannot beat the day time views from the Thayer hotel at West Point. My lunches there have been so-so, but it is an interesting environment.
