There are some cultures that eschew the tie altogether.  If you think about it though, a tie is a piece of fabric dangling from the neck for decoration.  It is not exactly the most practical sartorial embellishment.  That said, a good choice in ties can really make a big difference.

Actually, a few years ago I chatted at length with Martin Greenfield while I was buying a suit from him at a BB trunk show. I asked him if he knew Izzy at LS Men's Clothing. He said: "Oh yes, I used to sell his mother some things." Then he said: "Izzy has all of the NY Hasidics as his customers."
