Do you already own this purple BB tie and is the only tie you own? I am trying to figure out your insistence on wearing this tie. Don't get me wrong, it's all about personal tastes, but I would try to avoid a pattern like the one you've shown.

Aw, lay off. I like the tie (though I think I like it better in the green and red options), and as you said, it's a matter of taste.

I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion, even if it isn't any good :teach:

Not to be a jerk but what is it that you really like about the tie? It reminds me of some of the ties my father has from the 80's.

If he loves the tie, that is great. I will not knock on someone who really likes a particular item. But if some guidance and other offerings can be presented as alternate choices, no harm in that either, since this is a forum where one looks for advice, no?

If you want to branch out from the norm, why go with a black suit? It seems that most guys think a black suit is the most versatile color out there, but I think it's the least.

Dude, I really dont know what there is to get here.

Don't ( DO NOT ) wear a BLACK SUIT with PURPLE/lavender shirt with a PURPLE tie.

Okay?

Pick ANYTHING else. If you want to look more fashionable then everyone else, which is understandable, then may I suggest trying to switch things up in terms of accessories?

Some ideas:

Pocket square
Cuff links (these require a double cuff shirt)
A shirt that fits perfectly
Shoes that match the belt. Hell, maybe try brown shoes? Not sure how that would work out honestly
And the FIT of the suit matters more than anything. It'll change how you feel about your look completely if it fits perfectly.

This is the third 'black and purple' thread we've had this month. I am deeply concerned for the younger generations. I get chills of one day being an old man and black and purple-clad people with tongue piercings will be 'taking care of me' in my old age. Time to begin taking precautions.

Don't worry, the other purple shirt thread was made by this guy too. ug

^ Hmmmm, were we just trolled?

you talkin' to me?

No I was not trolling. I just think that if he wears a black suit with an entirely purple ensemble he will look worse off then if he was just normal. In fact, it would be obvious that you're trying way too hard with this whole outfit, especially if you won't take anyone elses opinion.

And...? A design being particularly popular in one era does not mean it's bad. I might say that 90's cartoony ties are dated, but then you have all manner of people saying that cartoon prints by Hermes are timeless. A lot of people hate paisley, for whatever reason. Ties are highly individual- they serve absolutely no purpose but to decorate. As such, the goal is to provide decoration that compliments your shirt and coat/sweater. The patterns that one likes are going to be a matter of taste. You like Vermeer, I like Van Gogh. Different sensibilities, but neither is actually bad.

It's just another pattern. It's from Brooks, so the silk is going to be high quality and the construction is going to be good. If the pattern or colors are not to your taste, fine. You're entitled to that opinion. But it's a fairly simple geometric pattern, and fairly classic colors.

If you think the tie is actually bad and not just not in your taste, you need to have to offer some justification other than 'it vaguely resembles something from the 80's, so it must be bad'

If he loves the tie, that is great. I will not knock on someone who really likes a particular item. But if some guidance and other offerings can be presented as alternate choices, no harm in that either, since this is a forum where one looks for advice, no?

True, and that's fine, but several people saying the tie is horrible with no dissenting opinion just seems off to me. Presenting alternate choices is one thing, saying his choice is completely ugly and invalid is another.

First off. I have pocket squares. But a white shirt and a tie with a pocket square is just so blase. Also I would go for a navy suit anytime over black. But black is more of the formal evening wear attire for formal events.

He thinks that he looks good so who are we to say otherwise? You came asking for suggestions and we are just trying to give our 2 cents.

If you really want to stand out and look elegant in a sea of black suits, wear a goddamn tuxedo. It's what they're all trying to do by wearing a black suit, not understanding that it is to a tuxedo what baloney is to mortadella. If you're going to a few of these a year, make the investment, buy a tuxedo and get it to fit you. And for the love of God, don't wear any purple with it.

I understand that you are somewhat younger, right around my age group/generation I would say. But if this is truly your opinion, why are you seeking advice on a public forum and then getting defensive when people give you advice. If you know what you want to wear, wear it and don't give 2 F***ks about what anyone has to say about it. In my less than professional opinion, black and purple will ALWAYS look ridiculous. :satisfied:

My issue is not the criticism, but rather, people on this site love to bash without offering alternative suggestions. THAT IS CALLED CONSTRUCTIVE CRITICISM. It works!
