College Formal: Black Suit+Purple Tie+Purple Shirt?

So there are a couple formals coming up and I'll be having to wear a suit. I want to branch out from something typical such as a white shirt with a solid tie or a blue shirt with a red tie. I was wondering if I'd be better off going with a solid purple or a purple check (I'm speaking of a purple on the LAVENDER side, so a bit lighter). I feel that a check would add a bit of sophistication, but a solid could look nice too.

This is the tie I plan on pairing with it http://www.brooksbrothers.com/IWCatProductPage.process?Merchant_Id=1&Section_Id=212&Product_Id=1545793&Parent_Id=210&default_color=PURPLE&sort_by=&sectioncolor=Purple&sectionsize=#null

You could try a gingham shirt and solid tie.

Something along these lines may work for you.

Very helpful. Nobody even knows what you're pooh-poohing. The color purple? The idea of a check shirt? Why bother to post something so useless?

What would you suggest. Nobody out here would every dream of wearing a navy or gray suit for an evening function. Black is what they are wearing

That's a little too out there. I'm looking for clean cut looks and classy. Not looking to make a super statement

Are you in high school / college / something else? What sort of formals are you talking about? (Because if high school or college, you don't have to do much to look at least as good as everybody else.)

I would contrast the shirt and tie a bit, so with a plain purple-tone (/lavender) shirt I probably wouldn't wear a tie that is almost entirely purple).

Google turns up lots of opinions on matching shirts and ties when one is purple:

Try a few combinations based on whatever you have in your closet / available to you.

The second one isn't that "out there" I don't think -- and it is along the lines of what you sounded like you were describing originally. Just go with a more subdued shirt (e.g. solid, faint stripes, tonal glen plaid) and don't wear a knit/grenadine tie if the occasion is in any way formal.

It's a college formal hence the title of the thread. But I like to keep it classy. Would this shirt work with the tie http://www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/Men-dressshirts-Non_Iron_Plaid_Classic_Fit_Dress_Shirt-lordandtaylor/181778/color-

I was thinking that all the shirts would be the color of that shirt whether checked or solid.

Not that fine a pattern. If the scale of the pattern matches, it'll look off. You have small boxes on that tie, and you have checks about the same size on the shirt. If you were wearing paisley or stripes, that would be a very nice shirt.

For that tie, you need a larger check, a solid, or a stripe.

Where can I find a large check? Or tie that would work...I really like that tie so I want to match the shirt to it

It may be my personal bias, but I really don't like that tie. If you want to do a checked shirt then you can keep it simple by going with a solid tie with some texture.

This is the third 'black and purple' thread we've had this month. I am deeply concerned for the younger generations. I get chills of one day being an old man and black and purple-clad people with tongue piercings will be 'taking care of me' in my old age. Time to begin taking precautions.

Brooks Brothers make some really nice ties.

That is not one of them.
