Has Anyone Every Asked You If You are From The US?

I was just curious if anyone else has had a stranger ask them that question. I was at the local upscale mall today meeting some friends for a coffee and some watch talk and had 3 people ask me that. It was those annoying people in the Kiosks in the center of the isles in the mall. It was strange that 3 asked the same stupid question. I never thought wearing red pants and carry a tote made people think that someone is from out of the US.

I always thought it meant you were the ghey. devil.gif Seriously, I've never had that happen, but in Europe, I have heard "Wait, you're American?" after I've spoken to people. Unspoken was "Where are the baseball cap, cargo shorts, tee shirt, etc." We are sad looking tourists as a group. Sigh.

Never make eye contact with the people at the mall kiosks.

Very true. I do everything to avoid them but they are an aggressive bunch.

Yes, it happens every few days unfortunately. Then I politely point out there is a difference between '美国人'(měiguó rén) and '英国人'(yīngguó rén)

I attended University in England many years ago. It was common once someone heard me talk to ask "Are you American?" It didn't matter if I was ordering a coffee or talking with friends and someone overheard me. The question was always being asked.

If someone random walks up to you though and asks blatently "Are you American?" I would take that as a bad sign...

Come on man Mr. K. This is just a bullshit device on the part of those kiosk sellers to engage you in conversation, then hawk their cheap tat, nothing more.

It happened to me a couple of times before I realised this. 'Hello where are you from?' even though I'm a foreigner in America with a thick English dialect I just keep my trap shut and keep moving. These arseholes are making the Galleria like a friggin third world country. I've complained about it a few times but nothing gets done.

Same same. They're both 尾國人.

I do sometimes wonder whether we should make eye contact with them on purpose. Just stand your ground, say nothing and stare right at their eyes, do not flinch, ever. Dont answer questions, just stand there looking silently and freakishly. Some will say something along the lines of "get the fuck outta here", others would be wierded out. It may make mall going pleasant in the long run, with them thinking you are the local crank and wont bother you. I might just try that out someday as an experiment, whats the worst that could happen?

You could make someone who is just trying to do their job feel worse about how their life is going and when their shift ends (or possibly before) they retrieve a semi-automatic weapon from their vehicle and lay waste to the food court.

If you simply avoid eye contact, they don't know if you're punking them or not and everybody gets to live another day.

I usually just say. " Yes, Effendi"
