Any of you living downtown L.A.?

Would you recommend it?

Are you deciding on living there because of its proximity to work?

i've worked there for 25 years. don't live there, though. there do seem to be some nice lofts in that area, i'm a bit astonished by the prices, still, despite what seems to be a great deal of vacancies.

I don't plan to live there but the person I'm currently dating is looking for a place in L.A. and I saw a 40th floor place at The Ritz and was wondering if the area was worth considering.

He doesn't have a need to be downtown and I've suggested staying away from it because its still so empty but he likes 'urban living'...

that la live is an interesting area. i'm not sure i would consider it authentically "urban" as much as a well-constructed fantasy of what urban might be. a disneyland version. OTOH, having worked in the REAL urban downtown, that might just be better. there are some good restaurants in the area -- my favorite is rivera -- and a few bars. mostly chain mentality, but hip chains. the area is still plagued by a lack of genuine retail ... you'll have to go a mile or so to find a grocery.

Thanks. I'll forward your comment along. It seems he's found a really interesting place on the west side so it may now be a non-issue.

"Disneyland" Downtown biggrin.gif... perfect

I can't imagine living downtown for any reason other than proximity to work. There are plenty of other areas that I think would be more interesting for a young professional such as yourself or your bf (both assumptions gleaned from prior posts I read that I might have attributed to you? If I have the wrong person then... shog[1].gif); the westside being one of them.

downtown is terrible.

it occurred to me this weekend ... if you want a truly southern californian "urban" experience (ie: shopping, dining, walking, etc), check out the area around the Farmers Market/Lacma/Grove. we lived there eons ago (before the grove was even thought of), and even then it was extremely cool. great shopping and eating on third street and on beverly. great sense of the old jewish neighborhood up fairfax; an ethiopian neighborhood down fairfax. the museum area (lacma and page) is really cool. you're 5 minutes from beverly hills and 25 minutes from downtown and santa monica. but you're still in a neighborhood with lots of single-family homes and duplexes, where people have yards, etc.

specifically, there's a really great apartment complex park labrea ... gated, now upscale (we lived there for 6 years in the 80s when it was basically a 40,000-person Jewish retirement home). it's like a self-contained community with access to everything. it's MUCH MUCH nicer now, kind of hipster, i guess. gym and pool and the whole thing. worth looking in to.

I'm not sure that place is luxurious enough but I forwarded the link along

Cats and Dogs are Allowed
Dogs are allowed in select Garden Apartments
Pet Deposit is $500 per dog and $500 per cat
Monthly pet rent $150 for dogs and $20 for cats

damn...I mean I understand a one time fee or a deposit and I understand issues with larger dogs
but $500 deposit for a single cat plus $20 per month?

Are they also going to charge me extra for nights my girlfriend sleeps over?

I don't think that is expensive at all. One of the buildings I toured in D.C. had a $1500 pet fee plus $100 per month
